VICTORIA, B.C. – In a low-scoring match-up between the University of Victoria Vikes and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, the Vikes were downed 10-5 by the Thunderbirds. Although over the course of the season the Vikes have shown to be a much-improved side, the team has failed to qualify for the 2012 Canada West Championship in Edmonton, Alta.

Hosted by the 'Birds, the West Coast battle remained scoreless into the second half with both sides trading chances but failing to capitalize on opportunity. Rookie winger Chelsea Marshall (Kelowna, BC) finally broke the deadlock when she crossed the try line at the 42-minute mark. Kicking for the conversion, Alanna Cryer (Calgary, Alta.) was unable to post the extra points and the Vikes went up by five for a score of 5-0.  
 
The 'Birds evened the board with a try by back rower Sagal-Maria Kahin and would go on to win the game with a second try by fullback Annabel Arnott.
 
We had a strong second half and played pretty well but mistakes let us down at critical moments,” said Mark Hall, head coach of the Vikes women's rugby team. “I think there's been lots of improvement over the course of the season but we still have some work to do.”
 
The University of Victoria Vikes women's rugby team wraps up their Canada West season with a record of 0-4 but will continue to play locally in the Vancouver Island Rugby Union.
