VICTORIA – Every other year some of the best CIS competition flocks to the west coast for the four-team tournament hosted in honour of formal University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball coach, Guy Vetrie. The Vikes will host the Carleton Ravens, Alberta Golden Bears and Lethbridge Pronghorns for the Guy Vetrie Memorial basketball tournament hosted Oct. 19-21 at McKinnon Gymnasium.

ABOUT GUY VETRIE
Vetrie was the head coach for the Vikes men's basketball team from 1989 until he passed away on Sept. 15, 2003 at the age of 52. Vetrie was entering his 14^th season at the helm after amassing 543 career victories and being honoured as Canada West Coach of the Year six times. In 1997, Vetrie led the Vikes to their record eighth CIS National Championship.
 
Previously, Vetrie was an assistant coach at Laurentian University under former Vikes basketball legend Ken Shields, and broke into the CIS coaching the Saskatchewan Husikes from 1979-88. A passionate man about spot and basketball, Vetrie's legacy and impact lives on through the Guy Vetrie Memorial tournament hosted at UVic.
 
SCOUTING THE CARLETON RAVENS
Among the teams visiting the island for the tournament are two CIS top-10 teams from the 2011-12 season. The Carleton Ravens entered last year's CIS National Championship seeded No. 1 after going 22-0 in the regular season and 3-0 in their conference playoffs. The Ravens went on to win the national title and Philip Scrubb, now entering his third year, was named the tournament MVP. Scrubb along with current fourth-year team mate Tyson Hinz were named to the tournament all-star list and both were named CIS first team All-Canadians. The Ravens were ranked No. 1 in every single CIS top-10 poll for the 2011-12 season.
 
SCOUTING THE ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS
The Alberta Golden Bears were the 2011-12 Canada West champions and No. 2 seed entering last year's CIS championship, after the Bears went 14-6 in regular season and 4-0 in playoffs. The Bears return 2012 CIS first team All-Star Jordan Baker, who spent the summer training with the Canadian men's national team.  Alberta was defeated 86-67 to the Carleton Ravens in the 2012 CIS gold-medal game.
 
SCOUTING THE LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS
Last season, the Pronghorns finished third in the prairie division of the Canada West with a 11-9 regular season record. The Pronghorns were knocked out of the post-season by Fraser Valley, who defeated them 69-68. The Horns are led by head coach Dave Adams in his fifth season.
