The University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team swept the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades at the Envision Athletic Centre this weekend completing the two-game series with a win Nov. 10. The 78-72 victory improves their Canada West regular season record to 4-0, while the Cascades record falls to 2-2.
BOX SCORE
The Vikes picked up where they left off on Friday night playing great defence and shooting the ball well. Victoria held the Cascades to 15 first-quarter points, while they built up a double-digit lead by shooting 55 per cent from the floor.
In the second quarter, Victoria held Fraser Valley to eight points and went into the locker room with a commanding 19-point lead.
The Vikes were led by Chris McLaughlin Oakville, Ont. with 11 points and five rebounds. Terrell Evans, Las Vegas, Nevada added 10 points as eight different Vikes scored at least two points in the half.
The Cascades were led by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ont. with 12 points, two assists and four rebounds. Parchment hit for 60 per cent of the Cascades' offence in the first half as only four Fraser Valley players scored in the opening half.
In the third quarter, the Cascades came to life holding Victoria to 16 points and outscoring the Vikes by 11 to move within eight points at the end of the third quarter.
Veteran fifth-year forward Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC scored 12 of his 21 points in the third quarter to lead the Cascades back into the game. The Cascades continued to chip away at the Vikes' lead and with 30 seconds remaining in the game, came within four points before Vikes forward Evans hit two clutch free throws to put the game out of reach.
UFV shot 60 percent in the second half including 65 percent from behind the arch. The Cascades' effort tonight fell short as Victoria was able to withstand the more accurate second-half shooting by Fraser Valley. The home side played a very physical game and as the game ended the bench was shorten by three players fouling out.
The Vikes were led by McLaughlin, with a team-high 22 point performance. Evans added 17 points as head coach Craig Beaucamp showed his entire bench for the win. Nine different Vikes scored as least two points in the victory. McLaughlin and Evans each pulled down seven boards as Victoria out rebounded the Cascades 29 to 22.
The Vikes will return home to host a double header against the Trinity Western Spartans, Nov. 16-17, at McKinnon Gym. All games will be broadcast live at htttp://uvic.canadawest.tv
