Short-handed Vikes dropped by No. 10 Bears

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes men met their match on Nov. 23, as the visitors were downed 89-54 by the defending Canada West champions, the CIS No.10-ranked Alberta Golden Bears.

Alberta's Jordan Baker dominated the floor with 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Kenneth Otieno and Sahr Saffa further propelled the Golden Bears as the pair added 17 and 13 points, respectively.

For the Vikes, who were without injured players Pierce Anderson (Calgary, AB) and Vijay Dhillon (Richmond, B.C.), the short-manned bench were led by Terrell Evans (Las Vegas, NV), who picked up 19 points and eight rebounds. Rookie Kyle Peterson (Edmonton) added a season-high 15 points, while Ryan Erikson (Victoria, B.C.) went perfect from the line to chip in with eight.

The Golden Bears opened an eight-point margin within the opening three minutes of the game. Evans and Erikson were the first to give the Vikes some numbers on the board but Alberta's Saffa and Baker continued to make good in the paint to stretch the home side's lead by as much as 16. The Vikes trailed 24-10 entering the second quarter.

The Golden Bears out-scored the Vikes 22-17 in the second quarter, as usual scoring guard Michael Acheampong (Toronto, Ont.) was held to only four points in the game. The Bears headed to the change room at half with a comfortable 52-27 advantage.

The Vikes sat at 23.3 per cent in shooting for the second half despite improving to an 81 per cent accuracy margin from the charity stripe. In the third, Alberta advanced their lead by 22 as Saffa and Tommy Watson each notched three perimeter shots. The Golden Bears were perfect all night from the free throw line and were 61.8 per cent and 45.5 per cent in field goal conversion in the first and second half, respectively.

The Bears shut the door with a final score of 89-54 to improve their Canada West record to 6-1, while the Vikes will drop to 5-2. The Vikes will head to Saskatoon, Sask. tomorrow to face the Saskatchewan Huskies at 6 p.m. PST. The game will be broadcast live at http://uvic.canadawest.tv
