Vikes visit Cascades for double header in first road games of season

Nov. 9-10: Basketball teams visit Fraser Valley Cascades

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men's and women's basketball games will head to Abbotsford, B.C. for their first road games. Both teams will have a double-header weekend, Nov. 9-10, against the Fraser Valley Cascades.

MEN'S SCHEDULE  /  WOMEN'S SCHEDULE

Both Vikes squads were victorious last weekend, Nov. 2-3, in their home opener games against the UBC Okanagan Heat. The Vikes men defeated the Heat 73-48 on the Friday and squeezed a 71-66 victory on the Saturday with some solid fourth-quarter efforts. The Vikes women cruised to 88-78 and 83-64 victories on the Friday and Saturday, respectively.

For the men, seniors Michael Acheampong (Toronto, Ont.) and Terrell Evans (Las Vegas, NV) have emerged as the clear leading scorers for the squad. The pair have been consistent double-digit scorers for the Vikes since the start of their pre-season, while third-year Chris McLaughlin (Oakville, ON) and second-year Reiner Theil (West Vancouver, B.C.) have also shown capabilities of being impact players.

First-year Kyle Peterson (Edmonton) had a break out performance in the Nov. 3 game against the Heat, as the freshman netted 12 points, including two shots from distance.

The Vikes men will face the Cascades who are also 2-0 in the Canada West after back-to-back wins over the Mount Royal Cougars last weekend, Nov. 3-4.  The Cascades are led in scoring by fourth-years Kyle Grewal and Sam Freeman, who were both on the Cascades squad that finished second in the Canada West in 2011. The Cascades qualified as the No. 5 seed at the 2011 CIS championship and finished fourth in the tournament, losing the bronze 89-86 to St. FX.

For the Vikes women, associate coach Dani Sinclair will be continuing to use the depth coming off the bench including eight players in their first or second year of play. Lone fifth-years Debbie Yeboah (Winnipeg, MB) and Chelsea McMullen (Prince George, B.C.) are the clear leaders on the squad but several fresh faces have shown their worth when given the time on the court.

Freshman Jenna Bugiardini (Hamilton, ON) has already worked her way on to the starting five, while Tessla Rennie (Red Lodge, MT)  has been a strong scorer for the Vikes coming off the bench.

Starters Jessica Renfrew (Victoria, BC) and Cassandra Goodis (Penticton, BC) are taking more active leadership role on the team as the two have been amongst the top scorers for UVic.

The Vikes women, with a 2-0 record in the Canada West, will face the Cascades who also are 2-0 with wins over Mount Royal last weekend.
The Vikes women' will tip off 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Nov. 9 and 10, respectively, while the men will play at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
