VICTORIA – For the second game in a row at the 2012 Keg Spring Cup, the game winner was decided by a penalty shoot out. UBC's Janine Frazao capitalized in the final minute of regular time to tie the game up but Vikes keeper Stephanie Parker's big save on UBC's fourth penalty kick gave the UVic side the final 3-2 edge.
The Vikes women's soccer team got on the board early in their opening game of the Keg Spring Cup against the UBC Thunderbirds. A great left foot strike by midfielder Jacqueline Harrison (Whitehorse, YK) in the 15th minute gave the Vikes the 1-0 lead before UBC's Lisa Furutani tied it up only five minutes later. Furutani picked up a loose ball and knocked a low shot past Vikes keeper Stephanie Parker (Chemainus, BC) to the tie the game 1-1. Both teams traded attempts, with most of the play happening in the midfield, resulting in a 1-1 score at the break.
In the second half, the Vikes were out-shooting the Birds and generated several attempts from the left hand side of the pitch thanks to great work from forward Lindsay Hoetzel (Victoria, BC). Hoetzel would later be rewarded when she was hauled down in the box by UBC midfielder Alisha Penev. Penev was awarded a caution and Hoetzel would finish on the penalty kick to send the Vikes up 2-1. Canada West player of the year, Frazao, stirred up most of the offensive pressure for the Birds tying up the game in the 89th minute with a low chip over a diving Parker. Frazao almost had the chance to seal the win in added time but Parker was first to the ball. Immediately following, second-year midfielder Jaclyn Sawicki(Coquitlam, BC), with some neat footwork, curled one across the face of the goal from in tight but the Vikes were unable to capitalize, sending the 2-2 game to penalty kicks.
The Vikes were the first shooters for the round of penalty kicks with Sawicki, Harrison and rookie Emma Greig (Tofino, BC) scoring on their first three shots. Parker stoned Frazao on UBC's first attempt and made the game-winning save on UBC's fourth shot against Kelly Cook. The Vikes would win the shootouts 3-2, which would also be the final score of the game. The Vikes now move on to the Keg Spring Cup finals tomorrow, Mar. 25 at 2:00 p.m.
