VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team will take to the road this weekend looking to walk away with some points from the University of Calgary Dinos and the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Sept. 22-23. The Vikes are currently undefeated and third in the Canada West standings with a 2-0-1 record.
FULL SCHEDULE / ROSTER
Last weekend the Vikes women cruised through a 10-0 victory over CIS newcomers the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. Second-year Emma Greig (Tofino, BC) netted her second hat trick of the season in only three games. Several other Vikes names spread the scoring in the win as the Vikes move ahead with 16 goals for and only one against.
Fifth-year keeper Stephanie Parker (Chemainus, BC) has been a key part of the Vikes' record, allowing only one goal so far, when the Vikes tied the Alberta Pandas 1-1 in their home opener on Sept. 7.
Vikes head coach #Tracy David#, in her 10th season, has good depth amongst her squad with the ability to change several positions at the half-time substitution mark. Starting veterans have included fourth-year midfielder Jacqueline Harrison (Whitehorse, YT) and third-year team Canada member Jaclyn Sawicki (Coquitlam, BC) but the depth off the bench has seemed to make the difference.
First-year striker Sarah Douglas (London, ONT) has made an impact almost every minute she has been on the pitch with her size and speed up front. Douglas leads the Vikes in assists and is tied for second on the team in points. Islander Greig has subbed on in the second half twice now and leads the team in scoring with six goals.
This weekend the Vikes will head to Alberta and face the Dinos and Horns. On Sept. 22, the Vikes will be at Calgary with kick-off at 11 a.m.. On Sept. 23, the Vikes will travel to Lethbridge with kick-off at 9 a.m. PST.
SCOUTING THE DINOS
The winless Dinos are currently 10th in the Canada West standings after taking on Western powerhouses UBC and Trinity Western in their opening matches. Both teams dominated the Dinos 5-1 and 6-1, respectively. The following weekend, the Dinos came away with two draws against the Alberta Pandas and Mount Royal Cougars leaving them with a 0-2-2 record.
The young Dinos are backed by fifth-year goalkeeper Kristen Barton and look to fourth-year forwards Lauren Deeks and Sarah Benson to lead the offense. The Vikes are led by head coach Matthew Shepherd in his first season.
SCOUTING THE PRONGHORNS
The Pronghorns women's soccer team are currently ninth in the Canada West rankings with a 1-3-0 record, one spot ahead of the Dinos. The Horns faced the Trinity Western Spartans and UBC Thunderbirds in their opening weekend. Both teams blanked the Horns 6-0 and 4-0, respectively. Last weekend, Lethbridge defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 1-0 on a goal by Erin Greeves before losing 6-0 to the Alberta Pandas.
The Horns lost several veterans from their 2011 squad and added 10 new faces with only three players in their fourth year of eligibility. Fourth-year goalkeeper Taura Willouhby will be relied upon for her leadership and experience commanding the backfield.
