VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team had a five game undefeated streak come to a hault after conceding an 82-62 loss to the defending CIS champions, the Carleton Ravens. The Oct. 20 match up was the finale of the annual House-Laughton tournament hosted in Ottawa.

BOX SCORE
Â
The Vikes had three players hit double digits including
Marcus Tibbs with 15 points and both
Chris McLaughlin and
Terrell Evans with 14. McLaughlin added eight rebounds to the mix, while the Vikes shot 46 per cent from the field and 35 from beyond the arc.
Â
Not surprisingly Carleton had an impressive showing from reigning CIS Player of the Year Philip Scrubb who had 24 points in 38 minutes played. Clinton Springer-Williams added 20 points and Tyson Hinz added 19. The Ravens were 12-for-28 from distance and edged the Vikes in offensive boards 16-9.
Â
"We got off to a really poor start and you just can't do that with a team of this caliber," said Vikes head coach
Craig Beaucamp after the Vikes were out-scored 29-10 in the opening quarter. "We got a little buried after the first quarter but we played really well for the next three and battled all the way to the end."
Â
The Vikes did just that rebounding from their first-quarter performance to outscore the home team 20-16 in the second quarter to cut the Ravens' lead to 15. Hinz had three first-half treys to keep Carleton on track while Scrubb missed all but one scoring attempt to total 14 points after the opening two quarters.
Â
Despite the slow start the Vikes rallied back staying on par with the Ravens, who rolled in only six players for the majority of the game including 2013 CIS tournament player of the game Thomas Scrubb. Scrubb added 15 point and was perfect from the line.
Â
The Vikes conceded 18 turnovers to Carleton's 12 despite being outscored only 20-16 in the third and 17-16 in the fourth.Â
Â
"That is what this time of the year is for," added Beaucamp about the team's first pre-season loss. "We have to play catch up and just keep getting better. It is disappointing but we are now 5-1 (in pre-season) and we have people's attention."
Â
The Vikes closed out the game with a 82-62 loss to the powerhouse Ravens. The last time the two teams met was in the 2013 CIS Final 8 first round where Carleton dominated 83-46. Since then the Vikes have lost three starters from that squad, while the Ravens still boast all starting five from the championship-winning team.
Â
Up next the Vikes men will return to McKinnon Gym where they will host Warner Pacific in exhibition on Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. The game will be streamed live at
