PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The No. 9 University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team held off a comeback from the UNBC Timberwolves on Oct. 26 to finish with a 3-2 win. The Vikes move to 9-3-1, while the Timberwolves fall to 2-8-3.

The Vikes netted all three goals in the first half. Cam Hundal (Terrace, BC) was the first to score in the 12th minute assisted by Cam Stokes (Richmond, BC). Gavin Barret (Richmond, BC) added one of his own in minute 22, while Stokes scored his 10th of the season, adding one in the 44th miunte.

After a slow first half the Timberwolves found their groove in the second 45. UNBC was able to notch two goals in their favour with Tyson Hunter scoring in minute 67 and an UVic own goal in minute 84. 

Despite travel delays the day previous and the chilly weather the island squad came ready to play. The Vikes controlled possession for the majority of the game and the proof showed in the first frame. In 45 minutes Uvic was able to net all three of their goals and create multiple chances. Third year midfielder Hundal was the first to score for the Vikes. A ball played from Stokes on the right side of the field put Hundal in position to take his defender one-on-one, the result was a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game. 

Two more goals for the Vikes rounded out their scoring for the game. One from Barret in the 22nd minute, Craig Gorman (Victoria, BC) was credited with the assist, and another from Stokes in the 44th minute. Gorman regained control of the ball inside the box and played it out to defender Bobby Eng (Richmond, BC) who was able to cross the ball from the left side in front of the right post. Stokes cleared the back line and was able to slot his header past the UNBC keeper. The Vikes retained their 3-0 lead heading into the break. 

After half a few key substitutions for both teams inserted some energy into the line-ups. For the Timberwolves this created an opportunity to work their offence and create scoring chances of their own. Right side midfield Alan Zhao (Vancouver, BC) was instrumental for the Timberwolves, playing several worthy balls into the box and setting up UNBC's strikers to take on the Uvic back line.

In minute 67 Zhao put a ball over his defender and directly to the feet of centre midfield Tyson Hunter (Langley, BC), Hunter crossed the ball over creating enough space to get a shot off and notch the Timberwolves first goal of the game. An own goal in minute 84 put the Timberwolves within one point of the Vikes but they were not able to capitalize in the last six minutes. 

The Timberwolves finished behind the No. 9  Vikes 3-2 at the end of 90 minutes. Craig Taylor (Victoria, BC) was named MVP for the Vikes alongside Tyson Hunter (Langley, BC) who was named MVP for the Timberwolves.

Both teams will return to the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Fields tomorrow for their final game of the season. Kick off is set for 12 p.m. and the game can be viewed at http://canadawest.tv.
