VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team will split a home-and-home series with the UBC Thunderbirds this weekend, Feb. 15-16. Both teams have locked up hosting rights for the Canada West quarter-finals and will be looking to use this weekend to propel them in to the post season. Saturday's game at McKinnon gymnasium will also be UVic's sixth-annual Shoot for the Cure event.

After swallowing a tough loss to Mount Royal in their last game, Feb. 9, the Vikes men will be looking to get back on pace. The Cougars ended a seven-game winning streak for the Vikes after draining the clock to win 69-68. The previous night, Feb. 8, the Vikes defeated the Cougars 74-69.

Terrell Evans (Las Vegas, NV) was a little quieter over the weekend as
Chris McLaughlin (Oakville, ON) picked up the tab with a 17-point performance on the Friday and
Michael Acheampong (Toronto, Ont.) did well from distance for 19 points on Saturday.
The Vikes men are currently 14-6 in the Canada West, while the T-Birds are 18-2 and on a 12-game undefeated streak. Trailing the Vikes in the Pacific Division are Trinity Western and Fraser Valley, both with 11-9 records.
Evans currently leads the Vikes in scoring with an average of 17.4 points per game and leads the conference in steals. Acheampong and McLaughlin have also been X factor's, contributing an average of 13.2 and 10.3 points per game, respectively.
Rookie
Kyle Peterson (Edmonton) has earned his floor time as starting point guard and averages 7.8 points and 3.5 assists per game.
The Thunderbirds have the conference's No. 2-ranked scoring offence that averages 84.8 points per game and the best rebounding margin of +10.6. Scoring leaders for the Thunderbirds include
Doug Plumb, averaging 15.1 points per game, and
David Wagner, averaging 12.1.
In addition to the UBC-UVic duel, on Feb. 16, the UVic Vikes will also partner with CTV, Kool FM and CFAX to host the sixth-annual Shoot for the Cure event. This event stems across all CIS schools and since launching in 2007, has raised over half a million dollars for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
