Vikes prairie bound, face Mount Royal, Alberta in weekend road trip

Sept. 21: Vikes @ Mount Royal (12:30 p.m.), Sept. 22: Vikes at Alberta (11:00 a.m.)

VICTORIA, B.C. – The No. 4 University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team are coming off a big weekend that saw them upset the defending CIS national champions, the Trinity Western Spartans, 2-1 on Sept. 13. Defender Carly Branion-Calles scored a rocket under the bar in injury time to seal the win, while serving the Spartans their first loss on home turf in 18 regular season games.

This weekend, Sept. 21-22, the Vikes women will travel to Alberta and face the Mount Royal Cougars and the Alberta Pandas. The Cougars are currently 2-2 after earning wins over Lethbridge and UNBC, while the Pandas share the top of the standings with a 3-0-1 record.

Following their victory over the Spartans, the Vikes faced the then No. 7 UBC Thunderbirds under heavy fog conditions. Both teams were well-matched and the Vikes had a miscue that resulted in an own goal that gave the T-Birds their first win of the season.

Currently, midfielder veteran Jacqueline Harrison is third in Canada West scoring, with three goals in as many games. Harrison along with U-20 team Canada standout Jaclyn Sawicki have been the dedicated playmakers in midfield for the Vikes, while the experience of Brigitte Greig and Mallory Hackett have been the continual strength in the Vikes backfield. Goalkeeper Tanya Jones has posted a 0.625 save percentage.

This weekend the Vikes will look to extend their current 2-1 record as the 2012 CIS bronze medallist are already looking at the tough competition that stands in the way between them and the 2013 CIS national championship, hosted in Toronto, Ont. from Nov. 7-11.
