VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team weathered a torrential downpour for 90 minutes as they prevailed 2-0 over the Fraser Valley Cascades on Sept. 28 on UVic's secondary turf pitch. With the win the Vikes advance 4-2-0 in the standings while the Cascades now sit in the middle of the pack with a 2-3-1 record.

In took 40 minutes of playing time for the Vikes to get on the board thanks to a Lindsay Hoetzel tap in before the half-time break. Midfielder Jaclyn Sawicki also tallied late in the second frame to give the Vikes the two-goal win, while fifth-year keeper Tanya Jones picked up the shutout.
 
The Cascades tested the Vikes early in the match with a few narrow chances despite tallying only seven shots to UVic's 17. Second-year keeper Kayla Klim came up big for the Cascades on numerous occasions posting eight saves, while defender Karlee Pedersen was a constant thwart the Vikes' offensive line up.
 
The opening half saw a lot of even midfield play as both teams tried to settle in to the wet, turf conditions. The Cascades opened the game with a lot of pressure on the Vikes back line led by midfielder Carly Neeson. Despite her best efforts, the Cascades forced Vikes keeper Jones to make only two saves in the game.
 
In the 42^nd minute, Sawicki threaded the needle on a pass down the right side of the pitch for Emma Greig to run on to. Greig did well to draw Klim well out of her net, beat her and slot a flat ball across the open goal mouth. Hoetzel had the tap in to put the Vikes up 1-0 entering the break.
 
In the second half, play continued to move from end to end despite several corner kick attempts for the Vikes. Central midfielder Jacqueline Harrison continued to test Klim from distance but was unable to get any shots on target. Meanwhile, the Cascades had good pressure up front from striker Danica Kump and Danika Snook. The pair worked well with Neeson to create some danger but the UVic back line anchored by Brigitte Greig and Bijou Leavins were more than up to the task.
 
In the 81^st minute the Vikes extended their lead by two after hard work in the left corner from second-half substitutes Cassie Dennis and Natasha Magnus resulted in a ball being cut back to the top of the 18-yard-box. Sawicki had time to take a touch and lob a ball into the top right corner to lift the Vikes up by two.
 
The Vikes had a point-blank attempt for Emma Greig in the 90^th minute but Klim made a fantastic save on the in-close shot. The Cascades were unable to capitalize and were forced to concede the 2-0 loss to the home team.
 
The Vikes remain in the top for of the Canada West standings now with a 4-2-0 record, while the Cascades drop to 2-3-1. Up next the Vikes and Cascades will host Lethbridge and Calgary Oct. 4-5. Web broadcasting and live stats will be available at http://canadawest.tv.
