Evans powers Vikes to dominant win over Timberwolves

Jan. 17: UVIC 85 – UNBC 57 (Prince George, B.C.)

The University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team extended their lead in the Canada West Pacific Division, Jan. 17, defeating the UNBC Timberwolves 85-57 at the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre.

BOX SCORE

Terrell Evans led the charge for the Vikes, recording a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. The fifth year forward was assisted by centre Chris McLaughlin, who went unanswered in the paint for 15 points and 10 boards. Other Vikes in double digits included Mack Roth with 16, Marcus Tibbs and Ryan Erikson each contributed 11 through 40 minutes of play.

UNBC's Charles Barton went off in the first half, leading the scoring at the break with 14 points. Barton finished the game with a high of 21 points and seven boards, the only UNBC player in double-digits. Jibreel Stevens and Dan Stark each added eight points while Jeff Chupulled in eight rebounds.

Opening up strong in the first quarter the Timberwolves shot over 50 percent. Outside shooting gave them an early 22-19 edge over the Vikes. Charles Barton was key for the Timberwolves, draining just under half of their first quarter points.

The Timberwolves lead wouldn't last long into the second quarter, as a quick recovery by the Vikes put them up 10 points halfway through the second quarter. Edmonton's Kyle Peterson drained back-to-back threes to break past the 10-point margin and open up UVic's lead. It looked like the Timberwolves were going to lag behind until Jibreel Stevens hit one from behind the arc at the buzzer to bring the deficit to 12. The Timberwolves trailed the Vikes 47-35 at the half.

McLaughlin pulled out all the stops to start the second half. The Timberwolves did not have an answer for the fourth-year centre who was able to outmuscle the opposition. McLaughlin and sharp-shooting by Tibbs and Evans quickly extended the Vikes lead. With a 20-point lead the Timberwolves worked to pressure the ball and regain some footing. UNBC's Billy Cheng was able to nab two steals and convert the fast break for the Timberwolves but it would not be enough to come back. At the end of 40 minutes the No.5 Vikes finished ahead of the Timberwolves 85-57.

Both the University of Victoria Vikes and the UNBC Timberwolves will return to the Northern Sport Centre tomorrow night to play their second of two, Jan. 18. The game is set to tip off at 8:00 p.m. and can we viewed live at canadawest.tv.
