VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team scored late to salvage a point against the Fraser Valley Cascades on Oct. 11. Vike Carly Branion-Calles scored in the second half, as the teams tied 1-1 and both now sit with a record of 7-1-2 in the Pacific Division.
 
The Vikes struggled in the opening half, generating one shot to Fraser Valley's eight. The Vikes did have seven corner kick chances but failed to convert. Meaghan Storie logged all 90 minutes in goal, while Emma Greig was credited the assist on the Vikes' only goal.
 
Fraser Valley went up in the opening half from Monika Levarsky in the 21^st minute. Cascades keeper Kayla Klim logged five saves in the match, while Shelby Beck caused most of the havoc up front, generating five shots.   
 
Freshman striker Levarsky opened the scoring after being sprung on a breakaway from a terrific pass by Cascades defender Jade Palm. Levarsky took one touch and then slid the ball past an on-rushing Storie.
 
The Cascades went on to outshoot the Vikes 8-1 in the first half, and Beck had a great chance to double the lead in the 33rd minute, but her rising shot found the woodwork. Shortly thereafter, Storie made a sprawling save on Beck after a pretty passing play with Kara Delwo and Levarsky.
 
UVic was far more dangerous in the second half, and Greig forced Cascades keeper Klim to make a sensational diving stop in the 66th minute. 
 
Just over a minute later, Branion-Calles did what Greig could not, sending a high-arcing shot over Klim's head and into the far side of the goal.
 
The Vikes had a great chance to win it in injury time, but Cascades defender Dayle Jeras headed a shot off the line to preserve the tie.
 
There is just one weekend remaining in the regular season, and the Cascades wrap things up on the road against Trinity Western next Friday and at UVic on Saturday. The Vikes host UBC on Friday prior to their rematch with the Cascades. Both will be juggling for hosting rights of the quarter-finals.
