Box Score VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team improved 2-0 at the 16
th Annual Graham Shootout after a dominating 90-49 over the MacEwan Griffins at the PAC in Saskatoon, Sask. First-year forward
Justin Kinnear put up 18 points and six rebounds to lead Victoria.
The Vikes shot double digits in every quarter to find their fourth-straight pre-season victory. Six-foot-six Kinnear started the game, in replacement of injured senior
Chris McLaughlin, and was the Vikes' top scorer. Point guard
Marcus Tibbs continued his double-digit trend putting up 16 points and six assists, while
Reiner Theil added 10 points.
MacEwan were led by rookie Tarik Scott with 11 points, while senior Lee Danderfer and third year Seaid Deria each totaled 10 points. The Griffins were out-rebounded 32-24 and shot 37.7 per cent from the field. MacEwan also conceded 26 turnovers to Victoria's 12, while both teams were able to get their entire bench on the floor.
The final score didn't dictate the entire game flow as the Vikes had only a 12-point lead at half time, 42-30. Tibbs earned 10 points in the opening half, while
Mack Roth made two three-point shots to total six points at the break. MacEwan had a 10-point opening half from Danderfer, while Scott was good from the line and distance to finish the half with six points.
The Vikes utilized their entire 11-man bench, which saw Kinnear explode for 13 points in the second half. MacEwan were held to just 19 points in the second half, while the Vikes totaled 24 in each of the final two quarters.
The Vikes cruised to a 90-49 over the Canada West newcomers and will look to face Prairie Rivals and Graham Shootout hosts, Saskatchewan, tomorrow at 6 p.m. Pacific. Saturday's game will be the final pre-season match up for Victoria before hosting Regina for a double header on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 to open their Canada West season.
