VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team found the result they were looking for in their second game of the weekend, rolling to a 4-0 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, Oct. 4 at UVic's Centennial Stadium to earn four of a possible six points on the weekend.
Four Vikes found the back of the net for the home squad, with
Paulo Dait,
Cameron Stokes and
Cam Hundal earning goals in the opening half.
Dominic Colantonio struck in the second half for the Vikes, while goalkeeper
Noah Pawlowski earned the clean sheet in net.
Facing a squad that had yet to record a goal in the 2014-15 campaign, the Vikes put themselves in a strong position to win early, with Dait making good use of a starting lineup nod from head coach
Bruce Wilson, notching his first goal of the season in just the third minute of play.
Despite WolfPack head coach John Antulov motivating his squad from the sideline, the visitors struggled to keep pace with their Canada West counterparts, with the duo of Stokes and Dait's speed causing problems during several rushes in the first half.
It was that speed that earned Stokes his second goal of the weekend at 25 minutes of play, beating out his defender as he made a move towards the Thompson River touch line before firing a sharp angled shot into the net for his sixth of the season and a 2-0 lead.
Hundal was the next to get on the board for Victoria, finding an unusual amount of space in the attacking zone on 41 minutes before sending a lob that sailed over top of 'keeper Travis Froechlich and into the net. The goal was the fourth-year midfielder's first of the year and gave the Vikes a 3-0 cushion heading into half time.
Urgency was apparent for the visitors as the second half got underway, with midfielder Colton Walker breaking in tight to the left of Pawlowski before striking the ball across the mouth of the goal and out the other side.
Despite the WolfPack showing jump to start the second half, the Vikes dealt a definitive blow on 56 minutes, as a left-footed strike from Colantonio at the top of the 18-yard-box found the back of the net.
The WolfPack continued to search for a goal of their own, pushing into the attacking half and forcing a free kick that would fail to materialize. With the Vikes in no rush to put themselves in any position for a WolfPack counter-attack, play settled to midfield for a majority of the second half, evident by a combined five shots between the two sides that included four from the Vikes. The 4-0 lead would hold for Victoria, who earn three of a possible six points on the weekend.
Thompson Rivers WolfPack return home for back-to-back matches against the University of Nothern British Columbia Timberwolves, Oct. 10 and 11 at Hillside Stadium, while the Vikes head on their final road trip of the Canada West regular season, facing Trinity Western Spartans and the Fraser Valley Cascades on Oct. 10
th and 11
th, respectively. All games can be viewed online at www.canadawest.tv.
