VICTORIA – The No. 6-ranked University of Victoria Vikes women's team finished their weekend with a decisive 6-0 victory over Thompson Rivers WolfPack, pushing their undefeated regular season record to 7-0-1 record, while the WolfPack drop to 0-8-0 in their inaugural season at the CIS level.
Â
Scoring was spread across the lineup for Victoria, who received goals from
Mallory Hackett,
Shannon Elder,
Sarah Douglas,
Emma Greig and Stephanie Gutierrez. Goalkeeper
Meaghan Storie earned the clean sheet for the home side, while Thompson Rivers' Emily Edmundson made 11 saves, including nine in the second half.
Â
Hackett's early goal came by way of a well-placed header that lobbed over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Edmundson and into the goal. The Vikes did well to push numbers forward, with the ball nearly finding the head of teammate Greig before making it's way to Hackett for her first goal of the season.
Â
After looking poised to start the match, the WolfPack began to chase in their defensive end of the pitch, with midfielder Christine Fergin receiving a caution at the nine-minute-mark after Greig split the defensive line heading into the 18-yard-box.
Â
Elder showed noticeable jump early in the match, showing some fancy footwork around her mark in the attacking zone before the ball was cleared out of harms way. Moments later, an attempted through ball to Elder showed promise before an aggressive tackle sent the fourth-year midfielder to her back.
Â
Thompson Rivers' Taylor Miller's rush down the left side of the pitch on 20 minutes of play signaled the beginning of several minutes of pressure for the first year CIS squad. An ensuing throw-in provided teammate Bronwyn Crawford with space to fire a well-placed blast that Storie did well to parry away from the net.
Â
The visitors continued to battle for possession as the first half continued, but it was Victoria's Elder who struck next in the 41
st minute, receiving a ball from
Jaclyn Sawicki before firing a low strike just inside the post and past Edmundson for the 2-0 lead. The goal seemed to deflate Thompson Rivers, who nearly surrendered a third goal against themselves off a late hard strike from Hackett once again, but the Vikes would settle for 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Â
The Vikes were rewarded for their sustained pressure to start the half when Douglas padded the lead with her first goal of the season at the hour-mark of the match, finishing an
Emma Greig cross-pass from the center of the attacking zone for the 3-0 lead.
Â
The Vikes continued to convert on opportunities, as veteran Greig, second-half substitute Gutierrez and Douglas cashed in at the 67
th, 72
nd and 86th minute of play to seal their seventh victory of the season.
Â
Thompson Rivers WolfPack return to host the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves in back-to-back matches, Oct. 10-11 at 1:00 p.m. and12:00 p.m., respectively.
