No. 7 Victoria men concede second-straight loss to No. 9 Saskatchewan

Nov. 22: Victoria Vikes 70, Saskatchewan Huskies 95 (Saskatoon, Sask.)

It is the second-straight loss for the CIS No. 7 University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team who fell 95-70 to the No. 9 Saskatchewan Huskies on Nov. 22 at the PAC in Saskatoon. The Huskies hit 14 three-pointers in the first half to complete the weekend sweep and impove to a 4-2 record in the Canada West. The Vikes fall 4-2 in their standings in the Pioneers Division.

Only two Vikes hit double digits on the night including fifth year Chris McLaughlin with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior transfer Jeremy Leonard-Smith had 10 points and four assists, while fourth-year point guard Marcus Tibbs was held to nine points but logged five rebounds and four assists. 

Fifth-year Dadrian Collins led the three-barrage hitting seven of the 14 shots from beyond the arc for the Huskies in the opening two quarters. Collins was 7-for-7 on three-point shots and added two foul shots to score 23 of his 28 points in the game in the first half. Three others were also in double digits including Matthew Forbes with 18 points, Mike Scott with 15 and Evan Ostertag with 14. Ben Baker had a team-high eight rebounds and 11 assists.

Saskatchewan had  a strong first half, taking a commanding 56-30 lead at halftime. Victoria recovered in the second half finding the basket more frequently and even outscored the Huskies in the third quarter, 22-20, but the visitors couldn't overcome the Huskies' first-half scoring.

Saskatchewan finished the game shooting at 60 per cent, while the Vikes shot at 40 per cent. 

The Huskies travel to Vancouver to meet the UBC Thunderbirds to close out the first half of the season, while Victoria returns home to host the Alberta Golden Bears in the 8th Annual Shoot for the Cure. Games will be broadcast with live video and stats at canadawest.tv.
