VICTORIA – Rebounding from yesterday's upset the University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team totaled 16 three-pointers to put away the visiting Thompson Rivers WolfPack, 94-74, on Feb. 8 at McKinnon Gym. Four different Vikes drained three treys in the game as the CIS No. 3-ranked team's record improved to 17-3, while the WolfPack now fall 12-8.
BOX SCORE
Senior
Terrell Evans led in scoring with 19 points in only half a game played after early foul trouble. Six-foot-ten
Chris McLaughlin was unmanaged by the WolfPack as the fourth year had a double-double of 18 points and 12 boards.
Kyle Peterson and
Marcus Tibbs each had 11 points and were two of the four who hit three distance shots. Freshmen
Patrick Pilato and
Jordan Charles went three-for-three from beyond the arc to impress the home crowd with nine points each.
For the WolfPack, the back-to-back match up proved wearisome for the seven-manned bench but third year
Josh Wolfram used his six-foot-ten stature to lead all scorers with 26 points. Fellow third year Ta-Quan Zimmerman hit double digits for the second-straight night with 23 points, while Gerard Gore came off the bench to add 12.
"We played a lot better offensively tonight," said Vikes head coach
Craig Beaucamp. "We had big contributions from our bench tonight and people came in and didn't miss a beat. We had 30 points in the game come from them."
A 22-21 score line in favour of the Vikes was indicative of first-quarter action that started with both teams scoring on their opening three possessions. Wolfram put up the first seven points for the WolfPack, while second year Peterson put up two of the Vikes' four first-quarter threes to lead with eight points. For the second-straight night both teams had few turnovers, while senior Evans was forced to sit most of the first half after giving up two quick fouls.
Third-year defensive stalwart
Reiner Theil gave up two fouls in the second, while Tibbs went off with ankle troubles allowing Vikes head coach Beaucamp to use his reliable bench. Vikes
John Woldu, Mack Roth, Pilato and Charles gave the Vikes their first double-digit lead of the night after an impressive second quarter of shooting.
Charles went perfect on all three shots from beyond the arc, while Peterson and Pilato each added to the three-point party. The Vikes out-scored the WolfPack 24-14 in the second despite Wolfram adding another eight points to his first-quarter score of 11. In last night's match up
Reese Pribilsky and Zimmerman barely stepped off the floor to keep their seven-man bench a float. The fresh legs of the Vikes' roster helped the home team to a healthy 46-35 lead at the half-time break.
Back on the floor for the third, Evans opened the quarter with a quick five points for the Vikes, while it continued to be the Zimmerman and Wolfram show on the visitor's side, combining for 12 points in the quarter. Tired bodies were more than evident as Wolfram put himself in danger late in the third, picking up his fourth foul.
The Vikes out-scored the WolfPack 21-16 in the third and earned their largest lead mid-way through of 17 points to enter the fourth up 67-51.
In the final stretch, the Vikes' perimeter shooting continued to bury the WolfPack, earning as much as a 28-point lead to end the game 94-74 in favour of the No. 3 Vikes. With the win and the split weekend, the Vikes are now 17-3, while the WolfPack fall 12-8.
Next week the Vikes will end their regular season with a home-and-home series with the UBC Thunderbirds, Feb. 14-15. The Feb. 14 game will also be the annual Shoot for the Cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as well as graduating seniors night, where the Vikes will honour fifth years
Ryan Erikson and Evans.
