Baart continues “A” game as Vikes drop the Heat

Sept. 19: Victoria Vikes 2 – UBC Okanagan 1 (Kelowna, B.C.)

VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team scored all that they needed to take three points from UBC Okanagan on Sept. 19 at Nonis Sports Field in Kelowna. The Vikes prevailed 2-1 on the night to improve to 2-1-0, while the Heat are now 3-2-0.

The Vikes scored once in each half, the first coming in the 15th minute of play from Michael Baart, his third of the season in as many games. The Vikes' game-winner came off an own goal that stemmed from a Cam Hundal cross. Keeper Noah Pawlowski continued his outstanding form posting five saves on the night.

For the Heat Cole Kingzett was the goal scorer that broke Pawlowski's shut out in the 70th minute. Robert Hamilton was credited the assist, while keeper Christopher Cuthill stood tall in goa with five saves.

"We played really well tonight and we pressured them right from the beginning," said Bruce Wilson, Vikes men's soccer head coach. "We dominated the play and weren't really in danger overall."

The Vikes men wasted no time as the talents of veteran midfielder Hundal emerged early for two quality chances within the first 15 minutes. In that 15th minute, Baart rewarded the Vikes after the six-foot-two striker got a head on a Craig Gorman corner kick. The 1-0 lead remained entering half time.

In the second frame the Vikes continued to put pressure on the Heat, stirring up a flurry of chances right after the break. Cameron Stokes had two chances, one that went just wide and one well saved by Cuthill, while Gorman also had a chance to extend the lead.

The Vikes earned their second goal after a Hundal cross was knocked in the goal by a UBC Okanagan defender. Up 2-0, the Vikes seemed comfortable to stay in the driver's seat but the Heat continued to fight back and got on the board at the 70th minute mark.

A midfield turnover led to a pivotal counter attack that saw Hamilton spring Kingzett to cut the Vikes' lead to one.

Kingzett's goal would be the only one to beat Pawlowski, as the Vikes hung on for the 2-1 victory.

"Our back four played really well tonight and Noah, for the work he had, was solid," added Wilson, who highlighted the play of defenders Alex Redpath, Adam Ravenhill, Sam Prette and Reese Harnden.

Both Kingzett and Baart were named their respective team's game MVP

Up next the Vikes will gear up for a quick turn around as they travel and then play Thompson Rivers tomorrow, Sept. 20, at 2:00 p.m. The game will be available live at canadawest.tv.
