PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - Two goals and one assist from fourth-year striker Emma Greig lifted the University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team up 6-1 over the UNBC Timberwolves on Sept. 28 in Prince George, B.C. It was the second-straight night that Greig got on the board twice as the VIkes improve to 5-0-1 in the Canada West, while the Timberwolves fall to 0-6-2.
Three goals in each half was the difference as the CIS No. 9-ranked Vikes wrapped up their road weekend with six points. Fifth year Jaclyn Sawicki also had a strong weekend furthering yesterday's two-goal performance with a second-half tally in today's match up. Rookie midfielder Caitlin Milham also drained two goals and earned an assist in the win, while first-year VikesTeresa Anania also tallied her first in the Canada West.
For the Timberwolves, net minding duties were split between Jordan Hall and Kat Hartwing-Clay, each with three goals against. UNBC's Sidney Roy was the lone Timberwolve to break the Vikes' potential at a shutout. Roy's goal game in the 52nd minute as the Vikes out-shot UNBC 26-7.
While the Timberwolves continued to look for long balls to their forwards, the Vikes worked through their midfield, looking for Sawicki to constantly distribute. In the 16th minute Sawicki played a well-paced through ball to Greig, who fired the ball just outside the far post. The Vikes converted their first goal in the 27th minute when Millham followed up a shot from Greig and slipped the rebound back past UNBC's recovering keeper.
The Vikes were able to capatilize on UNBC's double coverage with two quick goals. Greig netted her first of the game in the 43rd after she beat her defender in a foot race, the next came a minute later from Millham who tapped in a cross from Carly Branion-Calles. Millham's second goal of the game put the Vikes up 3-0 heading into the break.
The second half showed more of the same, the home side battled to keep the Vikes out of their end pushing the ball up field, while the visitors worked the ball through the middle forcing the Timberwolves back on their heels.
The relentless effort from UNBC paid off in the 52nd minute. Midfielder Tianna Rossi played the ball straight up the middle to Roy, Roy turned and burned past three defenders before sailing the ball into the back of the net putting the Timberwolves on the board.
With a 3-1 lead the Vikes continued to step on the gas, netting three more goals before the end of the game. Greig was first to strike, finding the back of the net off a turnover in the 64th minute, Sawicki followed with her own in the 66th. The final goal of the game came from Teressa Anania (Winnipeg, MB) who knocked back a short kick from the Timberwolves keeper in the 82nd minute.
The final score in the women's game saw the CIS No. 9 Vikes defeat the UNBC Timberwolves 6-1 to sweep the weekend with six points
The Vikes will return home to host the UBC Okanagan Heat Oct. 3 followed by the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Oct. 4 at Centennial Stadium in Victoria.
