VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team enters an Oct. 23-24 weekend home series at Centennial Stadium against the Trinity Western Spartans and Fraser Valley Cascades with Canada West quarter-final hosting still much up for grabs. This weekend's home series wraps up Canada West regular season play for the Vikes.
Â
Three of the four top teams in the Pacific Division meet each other in the final weekend of the season in Victoria. The Vikes (7-2-3, fourth in the Pacific Division) face Trinity Western (9-1-2, second in the Pacific Division) on Oct. 23 before meeting Fraser Valley (8-3-1, third in the Pacific Division) on Oct. 24.
The Pacific Division play-off picture is still in the works with second and fourth being separated by five points. The Vikes, who have already secured a play-off spot, can finish anywhere between second and fifth, while a top-4 position guarantees home field advantage.
"It can be very unforgiving," commented Vikes women's soccer head coach
Tracy David about the competitiveness of the conference. "In this league, dropped points can make a massive difference in where you finish at the end of the season, particularly this division."
Â
Before an Oct. 18 scoreless 0-0 draw against the Calgary Dinos, you have to go all the way back to Sept. 11 for the last time the Vikes failed to score a goal in Canada West action this season – a 0-0 draw against Fraser Valley. The Vikes wrapped up that weekend series against Trinity Western with a 3-1 loss in Langley, B.C. It was the tail end of a poor start to the season for the Vikes at 0-2-1, scoring only one goal and conceding four through their first three games of the season.
Â
But the Vikes have since found their form on both offence and defence, scoring a total of 28 goals and conceding eight in 12 games this season.
The regular Vikes' core of veteran forward
Emma Greig up front, third year Stephanie Badilla-Gutierrez in the midfield, fourth year
Lindsay Machin on defence, and goalkeeper
Meaghan Storie has provided ample support in all areas of the field for the Vikes so far this season. Up and coming Vikes such as first-year forward
Kiara Kilbey and second-year midfielder
Emily Lieuwen have contributed strongly to the Vikes' 2015 Canada West campaign, keeping the future bright for the Vikes women's soccer program.
But the Vikes have their sights set on the present and returning to Centennial Stadium for a Canada West Quarter-Final match-up with still everything to play for in their season.
