VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes were victorious on their third of three pre-season road trip games after downing the Guelph Gryphons 71-65 on Oct. 24 in Guelph, Ont. The Vikes will have two more pre-season games, at the Quinn Classic in Oregon, before their first Canada West regular season games on Nov. 6-7.
BOX SCOREThree Vikes players hit double digits including
Jordan Charles who logged a game-high 19 points, while
Grant Sitton put up 15 points.
Mack Roth added 14 points, while
Reiner Theil kept up to his expected defensive duties with a game-high 12 rebounds.
For Guelph the majority of the points were scored by Ahmed Haroon who was 50 per cent from the field, while Taylor Boers and Drew Walford added 16 and 10 points, respectively. Despite the loss the Gryphons conceded less turnovers, 18 to the Vikes' 23, but shot just 34 per cent from the field.
"It was a really good team effort today," said Vikes men's basketball head coach
Craig Beaucamp, whose team bounced back from a 30-point loss to Brock and 17-point loss to McMaster over the past two days. "It's never easy in a third game (in a row). It was a competitive game on the court and on the stat sheet."
The Gryphons came out of the gate with the initial lead, going up 18-14 over the Vikes in the first quarter. The Vikes went on to out-score Guelph 20-14 and 20-13 in the second and third quarters, respectively, before Guelph came back to out-score the Vikes 20-17 in the fourth.
The Vikes shot 38 per cent from the field but conceded 23 turnovers to Guelph's 18. Despite the turnover ratio Victoria's performance was enough to get the 71-65 victory before returning to the West coast.
The Vikes open their Canada West season Nov. 6-7 in Langley, B.C. against Trinity Western and host Saskatchewan, Nov. 13-14, for the first regular season games on the new CARSA performance gym floor in Victoria.
