Vikes women's soccer suffer season-ending loss to Calgary

Nov. 5: Victoria Vikes 1, Calgary Dinos 2 (Saskatoon, Sask.)

SASKATOON –  The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team suffered a season-ending 2-1 loss to Calgary, Nov. 5, in their opening game of the Canada West Select Six hosted in Saskatoon, Sask. Jordan Smith's goal in injury time propelled the Dinos over the Vikes to advance to the semifinals against UBC. For the Vikes, this ends their 2015 season and it is marks the end of a five-year campaign for seniors Emma Greig and Shannon Elder.

BOX SCORE

Late in added time, Calgary broke out of their own half on the attack. After a nice passing sequence Natalie Arnett sent a through ball to Smith that was deflected by a Vikes defender before Smith corralled it. A quick move created space for the Dinos striker to send a hard low shot past a challenging Meaghan Storie for the game-winning goal.

The Vikes pressured late in the match with the teams all square at one, but couldn't find a way to beat the Dinos defence.

Calgary opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Maddy Lee put a perfect cross into the box for Maddy Fritze who volleyed the ball past Storie to give the Dinos an early advantage.

The Vikes seemed to take control of the play late in the half and finished the opening 45 minutes with six corner kick chances. The Dinos held strong to lead 1-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Vikes offence would finally break through in the 54th minute. Sarah Douglas sent a high corner kick in towards the front post that Calgary keeper Sam Chang-Foidl deflected away from the crowd. The loose ball rolled just outside of the 18-yard box when Elise Butler stepped up and sent a perfect strike to the top left corner to knot the match up at one.

Less than 10 minutes later, Victoria was in search of the lead. Another Douglas corner kick was deflected dangerously in front of the goal before Chang-Foidl would pounce on it to end the threat.

Calgary pushed back in the next 10 minutes with a couple of potential chances, but on both occasions the through ball was just long.

The Vikes continued to force the Dinos defence to stand strong in the closing minutes. A pair of late corner kicks were sent away by Calgary before the Dinos broke through for the game winner.

The Vikes will return home following tonight's Canada West Championship awards banquet.
