ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team picked up their second tie in as many games after drawing 0-0 with the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford, B.C. tonight, Sept. 11. The Vikes are now 0-0-2 in the Canada West, while the Cascades are 0-0-1.
Despite the scoreless finish the unranked Vikes grab points from the CIS No. 7-ranked Cascades with fourth-year Vikes keeper
Meaghan Storie logging the shutout. The Cascades out-shot the Vikes 12-6 with Fraser Valley keeper Kayla Klim getting the blank sheet for her side.
The Cascades had a strong start, nearly opening the scoring in the eighth minute of play. Off a Sunayna Samra corner kick, Tristan Corneil took a volley from 10 yards out that drilled off the crossbar.
The Vikes came back down and had a great chance of their own in the 10th minute. Cascades keeper Klim made an initial save, and on the rebound, Danica Kump cleared a UVic shot off the goal line.
In the 19th minute, the Vikes'
Emma Greig got a good look at goal off a corner kick, but Klim was up to the task.
The second half tilted in favour of the home side, as Fraser Valley outshot Victoria 9-2, including five shots on target. Vikes keeper Storie was razor-sharp and her best work came in the 51st minute. With Shelby Beck swooping in on a partial breakaway in the 51st minute, Storie moved laterally with the Cascades striker and parried her shot. Gurneet Dhaliwal continued the flurry of chances with a drive to the left post, but Storie smothered it.
The game ended in a scoreless draw and while the Vikes are content with the points, they have bigger things ahead. Victoria will travel to Langley tomorrow, Sept. 12, to play the top-ranked and five-time CIS champions, the Trinity Western Spartans. The game will be broadcast live on pay-per-view at uvic.canadawest.tv at 5:00 p.m.
