VICTORIA—In a battle between two teams guaranteed a spot in the Canada West playoffs the Pacific Division leading Trinity Western Spartans defeated the UVic Vikes by a score of 2-0.
 
The win boosts the Spartans record to 10-0-2. The Vikes meanwhile, fall to 5-4-3 and sit just one point back of the UBC Thunderbirds for fourth place in the Pacific Division.
 
"Trinity has probably won the league now with that win.  They're a quality team with a good tradition. They certainly know what it takes to win and they always find a way to get it done," said Vikes head coach Tracy David.
 
Rachel Hutchinson and Jenaya Robertson scored for the Spartans. Sarah Douglas and Kiara Kilbey each had two shots on net for the Vikes.
 
The game was potentially the last one at home for the graduating players on the Vikes roster, barring a last-weekend climb up the standings which would see the Vikes host a play off game.
 
Meaghan Storie, Samantha Lee, Lindsay Machin, Mia Gunter and Sarah Douglas all have potentially played their last games in front of the Centennial Stadium faithful.
 
The reality still hadn't set in for midfielder Sarah Douglas after the game.
 
"No definitely not, and it probably won't for a while. These girls are my life, just thinking that these five years are over is hard. I know that it will be a shock to me soon because it's been my life," said Douglas
 
Trinity Western took the lead six minutes into the game.
 
Seina Kashima whipped in a beautiful cross that caught out the Vikes defence. Rachel Hutchinson rose higher than everybody else to nod the ball into the net.
 
The Vikes did their best to battle back but it was always going to be an uphill battle after Trinity opened the scoring.
 
The Spartans have the stingiest defence in Canada West. They have allowed just five goals in the ten games they have played.
 
Trinity doubled their lead just minutes into the second half.
 
A loose ball in the Vikes 18-yard box bounced to Jenaya Robertson who made no mistake in tapping it into the open net.
 
With a two-goal cushion Trinity did well to slow the game down and take the sting out of the contest.
 
"We are a little bit disappointed they were able to catch us flat-footed in the first ten minutes. We had difficulties with their defence and just couldn't claw back into the game," said David
 
The Vikes best chance to score came off of a corner kick in the 62nd minute.
 
Lindsay Machin battled her way through the Spartans defence but her header rang off the cross bar.
 
Despite the loss, Douglas was proud of how her team battled throughout what may be her final home game.
 
"I'm just happy to have played with my team, we all fought so hard. That's what it's all about is battling hard with your team. I couldn't have asked for better teammates, I'm glad I was with them," said Douglas.
  
The Spartans will be back in action October 21 and 22 when they host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and the University of Calgary Dinos.
 
The Vikes will head out on the road for their games next weekend. They will play on October 22 and 23 against the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba.
