PREVIEW: Vikes head into the weekend eyeing top spot in Canada West

Sep. 16-17: Victoria women's soccer vs. Trinity Western Spartans (Rogers Park, Langley B.C.) & Fraser Valley Cascades (Abbotsford, B.C.)

Tale of the Weekend

There will be a battle for Canada West supremacy when the Vikes women's soccer team travels to the lower mainland this weekend, to play the Trinity Western University Spartans and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The Vikes will take on the Spartans in Langley, B.C. with kick off scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and then will be in Abbotsford the very next day to play the Cascades at 5:30 p.m.

UVic dropped the last contest it played against the Spartans, falling 1-0 to TWU in Victoria.

The Cascades will be looking for some revenge when they play the Vikes. The last time these two teams met it was UVic beating Fraser Valley in penalty kicks to book themselves a spot in the Canada West Select Six and end the Cascades season.

Last Time Out

It was a successful last weekend for the Vikes. They picked up back-to-back victories over the Grant MacEwan Griffins and the Mount Royal Cougars. The wins vaulted the Vikes up the CIS national rankings, moving them from number 10 to number seven.

Trinity Western travelled to the Prairies and won both games they played in Canada's breadbasket, beating the University of Saskatchewan 4-0 and the University of Regina 1-0. The Spartans currently sit atop the Canada West standings, just two points ahead of the second place Vikes.

Fraser Valley also travelled to Saskatchewan, where they tied the University of Regina 1-1 and beat the University of Saskatchewan 4-0.

By the Numbers

180: The number of minutes Meaghan Storie has been in net for the Vikes without allowing a goal to start the season.

4: The Vikes and Cascades have tied the last four regular season matches that they have played against each other.

8: The number of players that have recorded a point for the Spartans through just three games so far this year.

Coaches Take
Tracy David, Vikes head coach

"We have a little bit of momentum going on but it's always difficult to play Trinity Western and Fraser Valley, both of them have very, very strong programs. Trinity in particular are arguably one of the best women's soccer programs in the country. "

"We don't need any motivation to play against Trinity Western. We know the strength of their program and there's a lot of history between Trinity and the Vikes. So let's see what they're made of and let's see what we are made of."
