VICTORIA—The Vikes women's soccer team came out looking to attack every chance they got against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, September 30 and were rewarded with a 4-0 victory at Centennial Stadium.
 
Lindsay Machin, Sarah Douglas, Kiara Kilbey and Emily Lieuwen all scored for the Vikes.
 
"I think that we did what we needed to do. The young players that came on the field in the second half really showed well and brought a positive energy to the game for us," said Vikes head coach Tracy David.
 
The Vikes were on the attack from pretty much the opening kick of the game, and the score could have been even more tilted in their favour if it weren't for some great saves by Alyssa Smith in net for TRU.
 
Smith was called into action just eight minutes into the game when she had to come charging out of her net to deny the second-year Kilbey from converting on a great chance.
 
The Vikes kept the pressure up though, they compiled eight corner kicks and 12 shots towards the TRU goal in the first half alone.
 
The pressure finally paid off for the Vikes in the 22nd minute. Douglas sent in a great corner kick that  Machin was able to head into the net for her first goal of the year.
 
The Vikes didn't let up after their goal and were soon rewarded with another goal when Mia Gunter sent a ball into Douglas who was waiting in the 18-yard box. Douglas made no mistake and sent the ball past Smith to give UVic a 2-0 lead going into the half.
 
The Vikes made wholesale changes at the half, bringing four fresh players into the game.
 
Those changes paid off almost immediately when Natalie Cavallin worked the ball past her defender and sent a shot in on goal. Smith was able to deflect the shot but Kilbey was in the perfect spot to send the rebound into the TRU net for her first goal of the season.
 
"Good for (Cavallin) this is the first time she's been in the line up because she's been injured. I was glad to see her being positive in the game, she carried the ball forward and ran well with the ball," said David.
The Vikes added an extra insurance marker in the 55th minute. Douglas whipped in a beautiful free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box and Lieuwen made a great run to not only stay onside but also head the ball into the net for the fourth and final goal of the game.
 
The WolfPack looked better as the game wore on, and even though scoring chances for them were few and far between their defence stepped up and did well to hold UVic off the scoreboard through the remainder of the contest.
 
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the WolfPack, they will travel to Vancouver to play the UBC Thunderbirds October 1.
 
The Vikes, meanwhile, will stay in Victoria to welcome the UBCO Heat to town October 1. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

"We are going to celebrate this win a little bit for the next few minutes and then I have to be thinking about tomorrow. UBCO is a pretty good program, they will have had a tough game against UBC and we expect nothing but a fight from them for sure," said David.
