PREVIEW: Vikes take on the best in the West at Final Four

Nov. 3&4: UVic Vikes women's soccer vs. MacEwan Griffins & UVic Vikes women's soccer vs. Canada West Final or Third Place Game (Langley, BC)

Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA – Just one win separates the UVic Vikes women's soccer team from their first berth at the U SPORTS National Championship since the 2012 season, as the team heads to Langley, B.C. this weekend for the Canada West Final Four tournament.

The Vikes will play the MacEwan University Griffins at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3 and the winner of that contest will earn both a spot in the Canada West Championship game and the U SPORTS National Championship being hosted in Winnipeg, MB from Nov. 9-12.

Depending on the outcome of their match with the Griffins, the Vikes will then play Saturday, Nov. 4 at either 5:30 p.m. – in the Canada West Championship game – or at 2:30 p.m. in the Bronze medal game.

The host Trinity Western Spartans will play the UBC T-Birds in the other semifinal game on Nov. 3.

The Vikes and Griffins met once during the Canada West season and it was UVic who secured the 1-0 win inside Centennial Stadium on Sep. 30.

Fourth-year midfielder Caitlin Millham scored the lone goal in that game, while the Vikes outshot MacEwan 13-2 in the contest.

Last Time Out

It went right down to the wire but the Vikes earned their spot in the Final Four with a 1-0 victory over the Calgary Dinos last weekend. Millham again scored the lone goal in the game while Kiara Kilbey recorded her 11th point of the season with a nice assist.

After finishing fourth in the Pacific Division, the Griffins won a pair of close contests to keep their season alive.

First up was a Play-in game with the Mount Royal Cougars and it took the Griffins until the very last kick of the game to secure the win. Tied 1-1 after regulation and 2-2 after two overtime periods the Griffins went on to win the game in penalty kicks.

MacEwan then pulled off the surprise of the weekend in their Quarter-final, defeating the conference leading Alberta Pandas on yet another last second goal.

Kaylin Hermanutz scored in time added on to give the Griffins the 2-1 win over the Pandas despite being outshot 23-9 in the game.

By the Numbers

7: Meagan Lemoine is one to watch for MacEwan, her 7 points in the regular season led the team.
11: After picking up a shutout against Calgary, Puck Louwes and the Vikes defence have now recorded 11 clean sheets in 16 games this season.
35: The old adage that defence wins championships certainly held true in Canada West women's soccer this year. The four teams left in the playoffs gave up just 35 goals in their 56 regular season games.
