VICTORIA – It was all UBC Thunderbirds all the time in their 5-0 win over the host UVic Vikes men's soccer team on Oct. 5 at Centennial Stadium.
Kyle Sohi, Zach Verhoven, Mihai Hodut, Ryan Arthur and Rylan Sangha all scored for the T-Birds in the game, as the team from Vancouver dominated in both shots and possession.
The win bumps the T-Birds record to a Pacific Division best 7-2-1 on the season as they continue to battle it out for top spot in the Canada West conference.
Meanwhile, it's back to the drawing board for a Vikes team that now holds a record of 3-6-1 on the season and remain in a tight race for the final few playoff spots available with four games left on their schedule.
It didn't take long for the T-Birds to get on the scoreboard.
In the 11th minute of action, Sohi played the ball short off a corner kick, collected the quick return ball and lifted it up and over
Maxwell Branyik-Gil in the Vikes net.
The Vikes responded well after the goal and worked their way back into the game but in the 34th minute the T-Birds struck again.
Verhoven got in behind the Vikes defence and while Branyik-Gil made a nice save on the initial shot, the rebound bounced right back to Verhoven, who made no mistake in putting the T-Birds up 2-0.
Any hopes of a Vikes comeback were dashed right before halftime when Hodut scored his first goal of the year off of a nice pass from Patrick Izett.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first.
Any time the Vikes enjoyed a spell of possession and looked to be gaining some momentum, the T-Birds would end up being the team putting their name on the scoresheet.
The Vikes will get their chance for revenge soon. Both of these teams will now travel to Vancouver for the second half of their home-and-home games on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2:15 p.m.
