PREVIEW: Vikes return home riding high on four game winning streak

Sep. 29-30: Victoria women's soccer vs. UNBC Timberwolves (Victoria B.C.) & MacEwan Griffins (Victoria B.C.)

Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA – The UVic Vikes women's soccer team will have momentum on their side when they host a pair of Pacific Division teams at Centennial Stadium on September 29 and 30.

Playing the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves on Friday at 5 p.m. and the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday at 5 p.m., the Vikes will be looking to solidify their spot at the top of the Canada West standings.

Currently holding a record of 5-1-1, the Vikes have accrued 16 points on the season, just two behind the UBC T-Birds for first place in both the Pacific Division and the overall lead in the conference.

Just four points back of the Vikes in third place in the Pacific Division are the Griffins, while UNBC is sixth in the division with six points through six games.

The Vikes beat both UNBC and MacEwan last year, defeating the Griffins 2-0 in Victoria and the Timberwolves 3-0 in Prince George.

Last Time Out

The Vikes extended their win streak to four last weekend by picking up wins over the UBC Okanagan Heat and the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

Stephanie Badilla Gutierrez scored the lone goal in the Vikes 1-0 win over the Heat when the fifth-year midfielder scored directly from a corner kick.

Kiara Kilbey was the story in the Vikes 4-0 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. The third-year forward scored a second half hat trick to lead the team to victory.

UNBC lost twice in a row at home, falling to both the Trinity Western Spartans and the Fraser Valley Cascades by identical scores of 3-0. After starting the year with two straight wins the Timberwolves have now lost four games in a row.

The Griffins were also defeated by those very same Spartans and Cascades. MacEwan failed to score a goal last weekend, losing 1-0 in two straight games after starting the season with four wins in four games.

By the Numbers

6: Kiara Kilbey leads the Vikes in goals and is second in the conference.
0: During their current four game losing streak the Timberwolves have failed to score a goal in any of those games.
3: Emily Burns has been strong in net for the Griffins, allowing just three goals through six games.
