VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes kicked off their final weekend of the preseason with a convincing 92-75 victory over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday night at the CARSA Performance Gym.
The Pacific Division battle started an hour late, as the Cascades ran into delays boarding the ferry in Vancouver.
Once the game got going, freshman
Diego Maffia wasted no time heating up. He went 3-for-4 for eight points in the first quarter to finish with 12 points.
For the second-straight game, the Vikes hit the accelerator in the second quarter and outscored the Cascades 22-11 on the strength of an eight-point quarter by
Matthew Ellis. The Calgary native got inside and effectively shot 4-for-6 in the quarter.
Keeping the Cascades in it was Sukjot Bains, who had 15 points at the break. He drained three threes and added three more field goals to pace the Cascades, who went 13-7 last season. Bains finished with a game-high 21 points.
Matt Cooley heated up in the second half coming off the bench for the Cascades, as he scored all 11 of his points in the second half.
But the Vikes were too strong on the glass, as they won the rebounding battle 42-34. Leading the way in the board battle was
Dominick Oliveri, who ripped down 14 rebounds. It wasn't a great shooting night for the Spokane native, but he earned the double-double with 16 points.
His 16 points tied him for the team lead with sophomore
Aaron Tesfagiorgis, who connected on 6-of-7 shots, including both attempts from downtown.
The Vikes will conclude their preseason tomorrow afternoon in a rematch with the Cascades. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at CARSA. The Vikes will lift the lid on their Canada West campaign Nov. 1 when they travel to Prince George to take on the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. The Vikes home opener goes Nov. 15 when the University of Alberta Golden Bears arrive at CARSA. Catch all regular season games on
