Vikes eliminated during snowy quarters

SASKATOON, Sask., - The University of Victoria Vikes were eliminated by the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night at Field 7 Nutrien Park.

On a chilly evening, the Huskies shutout the Vikes 2-0.

Temperature at kickoff was -5 degrees Celsius. The field was covered in a dusting of snow and began falling intermittently throughout the evening.

Ian Whibley had the Vikes first great scoring chance in the 10th minute when he intercepted a pass and blasted a shot at Huskie keeper Marcus Baxter. Baxter made six saves to earn the shutout.

The Vikes carried the majority of the action in the first half, navigating through the midfield but couldn't pull the trigger in tight guarded by the Huskies back line. The Huskies broke up passes and covered the Vikes very effectively.

The Huskies lone great opportunity of the first half came in the 32nd minute when their leading scorer Nikolas Baikas drilled one in tight at the left post, but fifth-year goal keeper Jas Lally dove to knock it out of play.

Just before halftime, Niko Cristante took a free kick that bounced around in the box. Baxter got a hand on it and tapped it out of bounds just as the whistle went to end the scoreless first half.

The Huskies broke the deadlock early in the second half when Tobias Hyrich-Krueger raced into the Vikes zone, cut right into the box and sent a curving strike over Lally's left shoulder.

Baikas cranked another shot in the 58th minute of the second half, but once again, Lally was there t pounce on the scoring attempt.

Coming down the field, the Vikes were awarded a corner. The co-captain defender Evan Libke found his way into the box and appeared to get a touch on it, but it bounced over the Huskies' net.

Isaac Koch whipped several corners in the second half. The Vikes as a unit took 12 corners in the second half, but couldn't connect on the right bounce.

With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Hyrich-Krueger centred pass but by the back post, Daniel Roke got crossed up and committed the own goal.

The Huskies entered the playoffs having won each of their last six games and finished the season second in the Prairie Division with a 7-3-4 record. The Vikes took the third seed in one of the tightest Pacific Divisions in recent memory with an 8-6-1 record. It was their first time in the playoffs in three seasons.
