VICTORIA – The 1-6 Brandon University Bobcats already knew they were in for a tough weekend. Things got even tougher when they only dressed seven players at tipoff.

The University of Victoria Vikes defeated the shorthanded Bobcats 86-59 on Friday night at the CARSA Performance Gym.

"Well obviously we wanted to push the tempo and get the ball inside when we could. We wanted to get them in foul trouble and keep the pressure on them," said Vikes Head Coach Craig Beaucamp."Sometimes it can actually bother you when you see a different game dynamic than the one you prepare for and I think we lost our concentration in the second half at time."

The Bobcats arrived on the island with only seven of a possible 12 players for this weekend of Canada West action.

Dom Oliveri was on pace for a big statistical evening, but he ran into foul trouble after he picked up his second halfway through the second frame. One of the leading rebounders in the Canada West, he yanked down seven of his game-high 15 rebounds in the first quarter. The American started the second quarter by backing down Shun Williams, spinning to his left and laying in two of his seven points.

After a tame weekend last week for the Vikes, Jason Scully got involved in the second quarter after a Justin McChesney three. On the next trip down the floor, he crashed to glass, drew the foul and completed the and-1. He later used a backdoor cut moments later to add to his 11 points. He also chipped in five rebounds and six assists.

"I think we got Jason a little more involved and Jason did a good job bringing his energy into the game right away with rebounds and penetration," said Beaucamp. "Last week, they really keyed on him and were all over him like a glove. Tonight, the focus was to get him more involved and he looked good."

With the short roster, Anthony Tsegakele made it clear who the offence was going to run through tonight for the Bobcats.

The Gatineau, Que., native only missed one shot in the first half, as he creatively weaved his way to the tin and went 1-for-2 from downtown for 15 first half points. He also ended the third quarter on a tip-in at the buzzer to finish with a game-high 23 on eight-of-14 shooting. Tsegakele also led the Bobcats with 10 rebounds.

The Vikes took advantage of the Bobcats lineup in the first half and outscored the short bench 42-1.

With 3.1 seconds left in the first half, Vikes captain Scott Kellum drained his first shot from 40 feet away off an inbounds play to give the Vikes a 41-28 lead.

Aaron Tesfagiorgis nailed a pair of triples in the third quarter to set a season-high in makes. The sophomore guard finished with nine points.

Jaleel Webb went on a mini 5-0 run in the third. First, he pulled up from the right wing and sunk a three. Off the inbound, he stole a pass from Tesfagiorgis laid it in. He was second on Brandon with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Vikes' big man Matthew Ellis showed off the tools in the third, as he backed down Williams on one possession, ran from rim-to-rim for a lay in and used a two-hand flush for a few of his 15 points.

As expected with having fresher legs on the bench, the Vikes dominated the battle on the glass 65-38.

While the Bobcats might have had tired legs, their minds were sharp, as they only turned the ball over nine times through three quarters – then another six in the fourth when the game was all but decided - compared to 18 total turnovers by the Vikes.

With the win, the Vikes improved to 3-2, while the Bobcats fell to 1-6.

These two teams will wrap up the weekend set tomorrow night on Ken & Kathy Shields Court. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
