Vikes celebrate Honour Roll student-athletes from 2018-19

VICTORIA - Every year the University of Victoria Vikes commemorate the announcement of a number of student-athletes being named to the Vikes Honour Roll list at the University of Victoria's University Club on campus. Every November the Vikes Honour Roll recipients from the previous academic year are honoured, while the student-athlete with the top academic average is honoured with the Provost Award.

The recipients of the 15th annual Vikes Honour Roll are student-athletes who achieved a minimum of a 6.6 GPA (80%) while training and competing at the highest level of sport. Thanks to the generous support of the University of Victoria the 2018-19 group of recipients receives financial support for their accomplishments.

The Provost Award winner receives a further $500 athletic financial award, for a total of $1,000 in support and is honoured again at the end of the year at the Celebration of Champions athletics award banquet in April.

For the second time in the event's history, there are two Provost Award winners. This year, Hannah Walline from Women's Basketball and Natalie Cavallin from Women's Soccer shared the award.

Cavallin is a fourth-year member of the women's soccer team. Vikes Women's Soccer Head Coach Tracy David describes Natalie as the epitome of what a student-athlete should be. She has always believed in the Vikes Women's Soccer program and has given everything for the program. She is always welcoming and positive to those first year athletes and tries to help them make a smooth transition to university life—including tutoring them. She is an incredibly nice person and tremendous role model off the pitch with her volunteer work in the community.

"It's such an honour and very humbling to win the award. I feel really proud and special to be apart of the Vikes program. It's only because of them that this is possible, so I'm very thankful," said Cavallin.

Walline is enjoying her second season with the basketball program. Vikes Women's Basketball Head Coach Dani Sinclair describes Hannah as an emerging guard in her third year with the women's basketball program. She has worked incredibly hard to improve each season and is a fierce competitor on the court.  Hannah is a tireless worker and one of the most determined athletes and students in the department. Off the court, Hannah is a dedicated Vike, who often volunteers her time with the Women's basketball youth programs and worked this past summer as the lead coach for the UVIC Basketball summer camps.

"Having better time management and being really dedicated to getting everything done allowed me to be successful last year," said Walline. "Winning this award was really validating for all the hard work and time it takes to balance my academic and athletic life."

All of the student-athletes from teams that compete in U SPORTS sports also received an official Academic All-Canadian certificate.
