KAMLOOPS — A career night by James Fraser of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack sunk the University Victoria Vikes in their final game of the weekend road trip.
Â
The WolfPack shutdown the Vikes 5-0 at Hillside Stadium on Sunday afternoon to improve to 1-0-1 this season.
Â
The WolfPack got going in the first half when Justin Donaldson worked his way around three Vikes defenders and centered it for Dylan Hooper. Hooper wasted no time and buried his first of the season past
Harjot Nijjar.
Â
The second-year keeper Nijjar made his first start of the season in relief of
Jas Lally.
Â
Just before halftime, the WolfPack were awarded a penalty kick after Slyvain Taghaoussi hauled downed Fraser. The fourth-year Penticton product fired it right down the middle to beat Nijjar.
Â
Trailing 2-0 to start the second half, the Vikes had rushes from
Jack Hill and
Sergio Duran in tight, but couldn't push one across.Â
Â
"I thought we were equal in first half even though we gave two goals away and they came at us a little more towards the end of game," said Vikes Head Coach
Bruce Wilson. "The bottom line is that I thought we did well for most of the game. We were short a few players because of injury today, but all is not lost."
Fraser won a battle against Hill and snuck one past Nijjar into the opposite corner in the 71
stminute to give the WolfPack a 3-0 lead.
Â
He later completed the hat trick when he headed home the rebound off a shot from Josh Banton in the 82
ndminute.Â
Â
Seconds before the final whistle during injury time, Jordano Pinto tucked in his first Canada West goal.
Â
WolfPack keeper Jackson Gardner was only required to make two saves for his first blank slate of the season. Last year in nine starts, he finished with a pair of shutouts.
Â
With the loss, the Vikes dropped to 2-2-0 this season.
Â
This was the WolfPack's first weekend of action after experiencing a bye week last week. Yesterday, they played the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds to a 1-1 draw at Hillside Stadium.
Â
The Vikes return home next weekend for Thunderfest, as they host the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves for a pair of games. Game time for both Friday and Saturday night is set for 7:15 p.m. at Centennial Stadium.Â
