Box Score CALGARY – The University of Victoria Vikes held off a late push from the University of Calgary Dinos to earn the 4-2 victory during Canada West action on Sunday afternoon at Dinosaur Field.
.
Playing their only game of the weekend, the Vikes got going in the 8
th minute when
Isaac Koch sucked a pair of Dino defenders and the keeper over to him on the end line. That opened up the cage for
Jack Hill, who only needed to tap it in for his first of the season. Koch entered the match leading the Canada West in assists (7) and sat second in points (9).
In the 25
th minute,
Matt Hobson stole the ball from Dondre Bailey off a Dinos (5-4-0) throw in. Hobson raced up the field with
Niko Cristante. A give-and-go gave the ball back to Hobson, who was eventually tackled inside the box. Fourth-year co-captain
Isaac Koch took the penalty kick and drilled him his third of the season. Koch is 2-for-2 on penalty kicks this year.
Thirteen minutes later, local freshman
Daniel Roke one-timed a cross for the first goal of his career. A quick discussion by the officials was needed after the play, as it appeared close to being offside. A few moments later and they allowed the play to stand and the Vikes took a 3-0 lead into half time.
Jas Lally lost the bid for his fifth shutout of the season in the 57
th minute when a Dinos corner found Sam Gange, who touched it over to Decklin Mahmi. He used his head for his first of the season.
Gange wasn't done there, as he brought the Dinos within one in the 63
rd minute. Mark Bohdan sent a cross in from the right sideline. Gagne dove near the opposite post and headed home his second of the season.
The Vikes (5-3-1) snuffed out any chance of a comeback in the 81
st minute when defender
Evan Libke took a free kick in the Dinos' zone. His boot found
Jose Sagaste, who headed it over to
Ian Whibley for his team-leading sixth goal. Whibley entered the contest second in the Canada West in goals, two behind the conference leader, James Fraser of Thompson Rivers University.
The Vikes are off next weekend and resume action on Friday, Oct. 4, when the UBCO Heat (6-2-1) arrive at Centennial Stadium. It will be the first of three consecutive home games for the Vikes.
