VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes finished their home half of the Canada West season with a come-from-behind victory against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night at Wallace Field.
With the 17-15 victory, the Vikes went undefeated (4-0) at home this season thanks to a couple clutch kicks from
Maddy Aberg.
She had the game on her boot with 14 minutes left and she spilt the uprights to go up by a pair for the only clean conversion from either side.Â
"Lethbridge was a force tonight. They really tested us with their defence. It was great to see that we could pull out a gritty win at the end," said Vikes Head Coach
Brittany Waters.
Despite the cold and rainy conditions, it was the Pronghorns that looked comfortable early.Â
Three minutes in, Hailey Driscoll scored one of her two tries on the evening. Unfortunately for the Pronghorns, Caitlin Sears missed all three convert kicks.
Genna Wright added her first try of the season 13 minutes later with a dive into the left corner.
It took 22 minutes for the Vikes to cross into Pronghorn territory, but when they did,
Jenn Appleby put the Vikes on the board with her second try of the season.
The Vikes tried to claw back in it with great runs by
Paige Farries and
Maggie MacKinnon, but the Vikes couldn't crack the Pronghorns' defence when their back was against the wall deep in their own end.
Driscoll wasn't done and opened the second half with her second try after the Pronghorns forced a turnover at midfield.
The Pronghorns defence was stingy and didn't give up anything without a fight. Several times, the Vikes had the ball deep in the attacking zone, but the Pronghorns kept pushing back.
"They're very strong, coming off line hard and fast, gave us nothing. We had to earn everything tonight," said Waters.
After eight minutes of zig zagging along the Pronghorns' goal line, Renee Gonzales stuffed one in at the 56-minute mark.
Appleby pulled off her second try on the evening and this time
Maddy Aberg connected on the convert for the winning score with 14 minutes remaining.
"Great to have Jenn back in the lineup. She led the charge for us and we needed her to," said Waters.
The Vikes (4-0) are off until Oct. 6 when they take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (1-2) in Vancouver.
