Robertson scores late to topple Vikes

Elizabeth Hicks (Surrey, B.C.) also scored for TWU in the 17th minute before Robertson tallied her first of the game  in the 21st minute. Spartans goalkeeper Hannah Miller (Langley) made six saves in the win.

Vikes midfielder Nikki Virk scored both of Victorias goals, while goalkeeper Puck Louwes stopped six shots in the loss.

With the win the Spartans improved to 6-0-1 on the year, taking sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division. The Vikes dropped to 3-2-2 with the loss.

Victoria struck first in the match after holding the majority of the pressure early on, when Virk scored in the 7th minute to make it 1-0.

The Spartans countered 10 minutes later in the 16th minute, when Hicks headed a ball on the goal line off a Danielle Thune (Abbotsford, B.C.) corner kick.

TWU took its first lead of the game courtesy of Robertson. After initially being stopped on a penalty kick, Robertson scored on her own rebound to take a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans almost extended their lead in the late stages of the first half, as Vikes keeper Louwes made a crucial save in stoppage time off Rachel Hutchinson (Cloverdale, B.C.), who had a chance from in tight off a cross in the box.

In the second half Victoria tied the game back up, when Virk scored her second of the game in the 56th minute. The goal came after a Rachel Baird free kick was initially headed out of the box before coming out to Virk, who chipped it over the head of Spartans goalkeeper Miller.

That set the stage for the late game heroics in the dying minutes, when Robertson headed a Thune free kick into the goal, scoring her second of the match in the 88th minute to make it 3-2 for the home side.

QUOTABLE
TWU Coach Graham Roxburgh
"It was a little bit of an interesting game in that we started a little flat and justifiably Victoria took an early lead because of that. It was poor defending on our part but a great finish by them. But credit to us, we scored a wonderful goal off a great corner from Danielle that was difficult to defend, so it was a great job getting back into it.

"I thought we were pretty much in control for most of the game without creating great chances. I thought our decision making tonight was really poor, and maybe that is a little because Victoria pressed us and made it difficult to play.

"Overall, I'm pleased we came away with a win. The last goal by Jenaya was great, which she has done two or three times already this season. All that said, we're going to have to be a whole lot sharper tomorrow."
