Vikes shutout Pronghorns to close out home slate

VICTORIA - In its final home game of the 2021 season, the University of Victoria women's rugby team shutout the University of Lethbridge, 29-0, Oct. 17 at Wallace Field.

THANK YOU, GRADUATING ATHLETES!

In their final home game as Vikes, the women's rugby program recognized Brooke Bazian, Chanelle Edwards-Challenger, Renee Gonzalez, Zoe Goodwin-Sutton, and Gabrielle Senft before the match. Each of these five graduating athletes have made a lasting impact on the program not only on the field, but off the field as well in their support for the community, fights for social justice, and inspiring the next generation. The women's rugby program wishes them the best of luck in their futures.

HOW IT HAPPENED
16th Minute - UVic 7, LET 0
  • After Ada Okonkwo charged to pull within inches of the goal line, she got the ball to Zoe Williams who made it over the line to score the first try of the game.
  • Alexie Pusch was successful on the conversion.
32nd Minute - UVic 12, LET 0
  • Forcing a Pronghorns turnover, the Vikes had a series of runs downfield, ending in Gabrielle Senft carrying the ball to the in-goal area for the try.
56th Minute - UVic 17, LET 0
  • After a quick pass away to the Pronghorns on a scoring attempt, the Vikes were able to get the ball back and over to Renee Gonzalez, who scored her first try of the afternoon.
62nd Minute - UVic 22, LET 0
  • Finding an unguarded Shalaya Valenzuela on the left side, Valenzuela flew past the oncoming Pronghorn defender for the try.
80th Minute - UVic 29, LET 0
  • Putting one final score on the board, Chanelle Edwards-Challenger powered through the Lethbridge defence for a try in the final minute of play.
  • Facing a tough conversion attempt from the right side, Brooke Bazian was successful on her attempt to add two points for the Vikes.
WORTH NOTING
  • The Pronghorns had three solid scoring chances in the first half. While coming in striking distance of the goal line, the Vikes' defence held strong and kept Lethbridge out of the in-goal area.
  • The Vikes improve to 3-1 on the season, while Pronghorns move to 3-2.
  • UVic's five tries marked the third time in four matches the Vikes have scored five-or-more, and marks the second time in those three games that all tries have been scored by different members of the Vikes.

UP NEXT
The Vikes close out the Canada West regular season next Saturday, Oct. 23, in a rematch of their season-opener against UBC. The match is set for 1 p.m. at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre.
