Vikes fall to Thunderbirds in series opener
Final Score: UBC 3, UVic 1 - October 22, 2021

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's soccer team managed to score, but was unable to overcome two first-half goals by the University of British Columbia and ultimately fell, 3-1, Oct. 22.

HOW IT HAPPENED
22nd Minute – UBC 1, UVic 0
  • After Kayley Lidstone ran out to try and make the stop but missed, she was able to get back in position to make the save on the first shot attempt by UBC. However, the Thunderbirds found the save deflection from their first shot and sent the ball to the back of the net to open the scoring.  
42nd Minute – UBC 2, UVic 0
  • The Vikes defence managed to stop the UBC attack forming in the box, but in trying to clear it away, the ball bounced back to a waiting Thunderbird at the top of the box, who in turn fired it in for the two-goal lead.
48th Minute – UBC 2, UVic 1
  • After being subbed on at the half, Erin Jensen wasted little time in making an impact, finding Trinity Kettyls in front of the UBC goalkeeper, who in turn buried her shot for the Vikes' first of the game.
77th Minute – UBC 3, UVic 1
  • Awarded a penalty kick on a Victoria foul in the box, UBC was successful in its attempt to seal the win.
WORTH NOTING
  • Kettyls' goal broke the Vikes' four-game streak without a goal.
  • UBC finished the night with the 15-to-9 shot advantage, and 11-to-5 edge in shots on target.
  • Lidstone finished the night with eight saves for the Vikes.

VICTORIA - Securing their spot in the Canada West postseason playoffs, the University of Victoria women's soccer team came back to earn the draw against the University of British Columbia, 1-1, Oct. 23 at Centennial Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
57th Minute – UBC 1, UVic 0
  • Awarded a penalty kick for the second consecutive game, UBC once again was successful in their attempt to take the lead.
76th Minute – UVic 1, UBC 0
  • Awarded a free kick roughly 10 yards outside the box, Kyra Teetzen kept her shot relatively low but found Emma Skalik, who buried the ball in the back of the net to tie the game.
WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes finish the season 4-5-3, in fourth place in the Canada West west division.
  • Teetzen's goal marked her third of the season and brought her to a total of eight points, a team-high for UVic.
  • The Vikes were able to secure the win despite only managing to get five shots off on the night, three of which were on target.

The Vikes head to Trinity Western University for a matchup with the Spartans in the quarterfinals of Canada West postseason play.
