VICTORIA –For the first time in the history of the Vikes Honour Roll Luncheon, three University of Victoria student-athletes shared the prestigious Provost Award, while a record 132 Vikes were named to the Honour Roll.
Award recipients at the 17th annual event are student-athletes who achieved a minimum of a 6.6 GPA (80%) while training and competing at the highest level of sport. Thanks to the generous support of the University of Victoria, the 2020-21 group of recipients receives financial support for their accomplishments.
All student-athletes who compete on teams recognized by U SPORTS also received an Academic All-Canadian certificate.
The Provost Award, given out to the student with the highest overall GPA, receives a further $500 athletic financial award, for a total of $1,000 in support and is honoured again at the end of the year at the Celebration of Champions banquet in April.
This year there was a three-way tie for top academic honours. Sharing the award is Kate Martens from women's golf,
Trinity Kettyls from women's soccer and
Sofia Donnecke from women's cross-country and track. All three student-athletes earned an incredible 9.0 GPA while balancing their extremely demanding course loads and training for their respective sports.
Provost Award Recipients
Women's golf head coach,
Justin Clews, describes fourth-year economics student and two-time Provost Award winner Martens as the true definition of a leader and a competitor.
"As the women's golf team captain, Kate's ability to balance both academics and athletics is remarkable, especially at the level she accomplishes this. It does not surprise me that she continues to sustain her academics at the highest level while training with our team."
Women's soccer head coach,
Tracy David, describes fourth-year nursing student Kettyls as a hard worker who excels in anything that she sets her mind to.
"Trinity is a captain and a leader on and off the field, and she is the type of person who makes an impact on everyone she meets. She's extremely positive, motivating our team as well as the community with her role in the Vikes Kick Cancer initiative. When Trinity graduates, she will make an immediate impact on whatever community she ends up in."
Women's cross country and track head coach
Hilary Stellingwerff describes PhD candidate Donnecke, who completed her undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Harvard University, as an incredible student-athlete who's work-ethic shows in everything she does.
"Sofia now balances completing her Ph.D. in Chemistry while taking up the new sport of running, which she has done impressively well, making our varsity team in her first year and continuing to improve. All of this is only possible because of her strong determination and work ethic. Sofia has absolutely earned this accolade."
