Vikes win three medals on day one of Canada West championships

Edmonton, Alta. – Picking up three medals on day one, the University of Victoria swimming teams opened competition at the Canada West championships, Nov. 26.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the preliminaries, the Vikes posted 16 entries to the finals in six individual events between the men and women.
  • Sophie Tarrant claimed the first medal of the championships for the Vikes, a bronze in the 50 breast. Her 32.21 time also met the U SPORTS qualification standards.
  • In the 50 back, the Vikes narrowly missed the podium, with Lauren Crisp (29.50) and Jacob Rambo (25.76) each taking fourth place.
  • For Rambo, his 25.76 marked not only a career-best, but the first U SPORTS qualifying time of his career.
  • Padric Mckervill's 24.80 performance in the 50 fly matched the UVic school record, tying Alec Page's record from Jan. 25, 2013.
  • Tarrant, alongside Amanda McCallum, Lauren Taylor, and Sophia Brunoro, claimed the silver medal in the 4x200 free relay with a time of 8:25.11.
  • The men's quartet of Elijah Agostinelli Stull, Maxwell Fang, Mckervill, and Rambo posted a second-place finish in the 4x200 free relay to round out the UVic medal winners on day one, finishing with a time of 7:24.17.
  • On the day, the Vikes saw 27 new personal best times set, with an additional 14 season-best marks recorded.
  • After one day of competition, the men sit in third place as a team, while the women are in fourth.
