Vikes finish third at Canada West swimming championships

Edmonton, Alta. – Wrapping up the 2021 Canada West swimming championships, both the men's and women's sides from University of Victoria swimming program finished in third place, Nov. 28.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dropping just shy of four seconds off his seventh-place, 2:04.83 prelim swim, Padric Mckervill picked up the silver medal in the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.84 to earn his first career Canada West medal.
  • Earning a medal in each of the individual breaststroke events, Sophie Tarrant took second place in the 200 breast, clocking in at 2:30.02 for her third individual medal in as many days.
  • A half-second shy of reaching the podium, Jacob Rambo took fourth in the 200 IM finals with a time of 2:04.63.
  • Lauren Crisp nearly had a podium finish in the 100 back, finishing fourth with her 1:02.20 swim in the finals.
  • Improving one spot on the final day, the women's side moved to third place as a team, while the men remained in third for all three days of the event as a team. The two third-place finishes match the Vikes' 2019 Canada West finish.
WORTH NOTING
  • Adding U SPORTS qualifying times from Rambo and Elijah Agostinelli Stull at the conference championships, the Vikes have now qualified 10 men and 10 women for the national event in February.
  • Following the meet, Olivia Roschat was awarded the Canada West Women's Swimming Student-Athlete Community Service Award. Roschat, an Academic All-Canadian, volunteers with juSTEMagine, a STEM-education organization. She coordinates STEM workshops for students and community groups, including working with Prairie STEM, Girl Powered UNO, Girl Guides Canada, and Vex Robotics. In addition, she is president of the Delta Chapter and board member of chapter mentors.
  • All silver medalists, including the men's and women's 4x200 free relay squads, received Canada West Second Team All-Star status. For the Vikes, Crisp earned the honour as an individual, while Mckervill and Tarrant earned the recognition both as individuals and as part of the relay teams. Agostinelli-Stull, Rambo, Lauren Taylor, Sophia Brunoro, and Maxwell Fang received the accolade as part of the relay quartets.
THOUGHTS FROM THE COACHING STAFF
"It was a strong last day to the meet, with a lot of best times and seasonal bests to finish off the weekend.  The group worked hard to have a much better prelim session this morning than yesterday and put themselves in a better position in finals for success."
