VICTORIA – In what was described as a scrum-filled match at Wallace Field, the University of Victoria fell to the University of British Columbia, 31-15, in its regular season and Canada West opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
UBC 7, UVic 0
- UBC got on the board first, regaining possession on a loose ball and rushing it back to score the first try of the match. The Thunderbirds followed with a successful conversion.
UVic 7, UBC 7
- Breaking away from the UBC defenders, Krista Scurfield bolted down the left side of the field for her first try of the season.
- Making a tough kick from the left side, Kira Peary sent the ball through the uprights for the conversion to tie the match.
UVic 10, UBC 7
- Constant penalties near the 22-metre line by the Thunderbirds led to the Vikes being awarded a penalty goal, which Peary successfully attempted to put Victoria in the lead for the first time in the contest.
UBC 14, UVic 10
- Regaining the lead in the final minute before the end of the half, UBC scored both the try and the conversion to take a four-point lead into the break.
Second Half
UBC 21, UVic 10
- Scoring in the second half was opened with UBC being awarded a penalty try by the referee to take a double-digit lead.
UBC 24, UVic 10
- Earning points from penalties on back-to-back awards, Bauder secured three more points for the Thunderbirds on her penalty goal attempt.
UBC 24, UVic 15
- Getting on the scoresheet for the first time in 2021, Gabrielle Senft drove it over the line for her first try of the game.
- Peary's conversion attempt was not successful.
UBC 31, UVic 15
- Putting the final points on the board, the Thunderbirds rushed down the left side for the try, and successfully made the conversion for seven points.
WORTH NOTING
- After the game, UBC moved to 1-0 on the season, while UVic fell to 0-1.
- The match served as the Canada West opener for both teams, along with the home opener for Victoria.
