VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's rugby team outscored the University of British Columbia 19-17 in the second half to come back and end the game in a tie, 31-31, Oct. 15 at Wallace Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
- Getting the Vikes on the board early, Krissy Scurfield broke away for the try in the third minute, putting the Vikes ahead, 5-0.
- A quick tap-and-go off a penalty led to Madison Jumeau getting the ball down over the line for the try. Adding two points from an Alexie Pusch convert, the Vikes took a 12-0 lead in the 15th minute.
- The Thunderbirds would score the final two tries and converts of the first half, taking a 14-12 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Second Half
- UBC scored the first 17 points via three tries and one convert over the first 13 minutes of play in the second half, taking a 31-12 lead in the 53rd minute.
- Putting an end to the Thunderbirds' scoring run, the Vikes swung the ball out to Summer Blackmore, who found open space amongst the UBC defenders to get the ball in the end zone for her first try of the day. Adding a convert from Kira Peary, the Vikes cut UBC's lead to 31-19 in the 58th minute.
- Coming straight out of a scrum, the ball was sent left to Lucie Romeo, who dove over the line for the try to make it a one-score game, 31-24, in the 66th minute.
- Blocking an attempted Thunderbirds kick, Summer Blackmore got in front of it to make the interception and touch it down in the end zone for the try in the 78th minute. Peary put the ball through the uprights for the second time to end the game in a tie, 31-31.
WORTH NOTING
- Romeo's try marks her sixth of the season, a number which leads the Vikes.
- The tie snaps the Vikes' five-game losing streak to the Thunderbirds, dating back to Oct. 6, 2019.
- The Vikes close the Canada West regular season with a record of 3-1-1, while the Thunderbirds finish 4-0-1.
