VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's and women's golf teams finished the 2022 Canada West Championships with one team banner, one individual champion, and one individual medalist, Oct. 3-4, at Cordova Bay Golf Course.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes men captured the first Canada West conference championship title in program history, recording a collective +3 over two rounds of play, including dropping 15 strokes from round one to two (293, 278).
- Brining home the silver, the Vikes women posted combined rounds of 226 and 225 to finish +25 overall to finish second overall in the conference.
- Sukriti Harjai secured her spot as the top women's golfer in Canada West, becoming the Canada West individual champion with rounds of 68 (-3) and 71 (E) for a -3 overall card.
- Also landing on the individual podium was Robin Conlan, who dropped three strokes off his round one score to finish the tournament -1 (72, 69) and capture the bronze medal.
- Cutting 11 shots off his round one score, Aiden Craig-Steele followed his day one 77 (+6) with a day two 66 (-5) to end at +1 overall and in sixth place individually.
- Four Vikes finished tied for eighth place. Zach Ryujin (75, 70) and Chase Basanta (72, 72) both finished +3 on the men's side, while Mackenzie Scott and Mirai Hayashi ended +14 with matching rounds of 79 (+8) and 77 (+6) on the women's side.
- Kathleen Hodgson tied for 15th place with rounds of 82 (+11) and 80 (+9) for a final score of +20.
- Shooting 83 (+12) for two-straight rounds, Lana Rummel finished +24 and in a tie for 18th place.
- Tahir Shamji carded rounds of 74 (+3) and 79 (+8) to finish +11 overall and in a tie for 19th individually.
- The conference championship marks the third for the Vikes under head coach Justin Clews in the 2022 calendar year, as the men's and women's sides each captured the 2022 Continental Athletic Conference (NAIA) Championship titles back in May.
UP NEXT
The women return to action at the Western Washington Women's Fall Invitational, Oct. 10-11. The men will resume competition in the spring.
