Vikes can't hold off Thunderbirds in Friday night match

VICTORIA – A second-half lead was not enough for the University of Victoria women's soccer team as the University of British Columbia came back to claim the 2-1 win, Oct. 7, at Centennial Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
51st Minute – UVic 1, UBC 0
  • As Emma Skalik was being brought to the ground by UBC defenders, she slipped the ball to Sophie Murphy, who took a quick two touches before launching the ball to the top right corner of the net for the Vikes lead.
58th Minute – UVic 1, UBC 1
  • A UBC corner allowed the Thunderbirds to congregate in the box, eventually connecting with a deflection inside the six-yard box to score the equalizer.
70th Minute – UBC 2, UVic 1
  • A well-placed corner kick led to a header goal and the game-winner for the Thunderbirds.
WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes and Thunderbirds were scoreless at the half, which marked an improvement for the Vikes since the first meeting between the teams, Sept. 1, where UBC held a 1-0 halftime lead.
  • Victoria's lead in the 51st minute marked the first time since Oct. 12, 2019 that Victoria led UBC in a game.
  • UBC finished the night with the 7-5 edge in total shots and 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Thunderbirds also had seven corners to the Vikes' five, while each team had one save.
  • The Vikes fall to 4-5-3 with the loss, while UBC improves to 11-1-0 with the win.
UP NEXT
