Vancouver, B.C. – Concluding its home-and-home series with the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria men's soccer team fell to the Thunderbirds, 7-2, Oct. 8 at Thunderbird Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
5th Minute – UBC 2, UVic 0
- Two goals in 45 seconds gave UBC the early lead.
6th Minute – UBC 3, UVic 0
- The Thunderbirds took a three-goal lead after tracking down the ball as it bounced in to the box, getting a quick shot off for the goal.
39th Minute – UBC 4, UVic 0
- Shaking off Vikes defenders in the box, UBC broke free to have an open shot that landed in the back of the net to extend their lead.
44th Minute – UBC 5, UVic 0
- Taking advantage of confusion on the field on whether play had been stopped, the Thunderbirds sent a soft shot over the line for one final goal before the halftime break.
48th Minute – UBC 6, UVic 0
- A free kick from 25 yards out found a waiting Thunderbird in the box, who drilled it to the top of the net for first goal of the second half.
50th Minute – UBC 6, UVic 1
- After Javier Sagaste's shot was bobbled by the UBC goalkeeper, Hamish Ogden gained control of the ball to send a short shot over the line and put the Vikes on the board.
55th Minute – UBC 6, UVic 2
- Sagaste launched a shot from the top left side of the box, sailing the ball over the hand of the UBC goalkeeper to bring the Vikes back within four.
90th Minute – UBC 7, UVic 2
- Adding one more before the final whistle, UBC scored from the top of the box in the final minute of play.
WORTH NOTING
- Ogden's goal marked both the first of the season for the midfielder and his first career goal as a Vike.
- Sagaste scored his fourth goal of the season, which leads UVic.
- Mitrovic tallied his second assist of the year on Sagaste's goal.
- UBC led in both shots and shots on goal by 17-11 and 10-5 margins, respectively.
- Sagaste led the Vikes with two shots on the day, putting both on target. Ogden also finished with two shots, putting one on target during his time on the field.
- The Vikes now hold a record of 2-6-4, while the Thunderbirds improve to 6-3-2.
