Men's basketball completes sweep of Cougars

VICTORIA – Closing out the 2022 slate with a win, the University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated Mount Royal University, 103-71, Dec. 3 inside CARSA Performance Gym.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars recoded the first basket of the game, but the Vikes took over from there, amassing a 14-3 lead with 5:27 remaining in the first.
  • Despite Mount Royal making up some ground in the first, the Vikes held the 25-17 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • A 6-0 run on a Diego Maffia and-one play and Ethan Boag three-pointer put the Vikes up by 10, 38-28, at the halfway point of the second quarter.
  • MRU grabbed the final three points of the half to make the score 50-43 in favour of the Vikes at halftime.
  • Victoria finished the third on 7-0 run via Trent Monkman dunk, Renoldo Robinson three, and Sergio Pereira layup to take a 76-59 lead into the final frame. 
  • Continuing to grow their lead, the Vikes gained a 30-point advantage with an Elias Ralph three, 98-68, with 2:51 to play.
  • Holding the Cougars to just 12 points in the final frame, the Vikes claimed the 103-71 win. 
WORTH NOTING
  • Boag led the Vikes' offence with 22 points (10-for-13), adding eight rebounds in the win.
  • Maffia recorded 20 points, one rebound, and two assists for the Vikes.
  • Dominick Oliveri tallied team-highs in rebounds (12) and assists (6) during the win.
  • The Vikes move to 8-2 on the season with the win, while Mount Royal drops to 4-4 with the loss.

The Vikes resume play in the new year, heading to University of Regina, Jan. 6-7.
